Special Education Class Options

Special Education Classes  Placement determined by IEP team  IEP team determines specific courses. Case Manager needs to be contacted to change schedules or if there are any issues or concerns

Grades and GPA GPA = G rade P oint A verage Starts at the end of your 1 st semester in high school and goes until the end of your senior year Cumulative GPA : every grade you’ve earned in high school A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0 So a 4.0 GPA would be straight As 3.5 GPA would be a combination of B’s and A’s C’s and D’s would be between 1.0 and 2.0

Grades and GPA Rank : your GPA compared to all the GPAs of other students in your grade- level EX: 48/417 Transcript : Academic Record of all your high, school courses, grades, GPA, rank and if you’ve met your state testing yet or not

How your grades can affect you College : 4-Year Universities have a requirement for admissions, usually 3.0 or higher 2-Year colleges do not have a requirement, but some of the programs do Scholarships : FREE MONEY! Many scholarships are based on your academic performance The higher your GPA, the more scholarships you may be eligible for Colleges have their own scholarships they can give you, many based on GPA

Standard Diploma Requirements  You will need to PASS reading (236), writing(40), and math state tests (236)  You will also need 3 years of regular math credits starting at Algebra 1 and beyond:  Ex: (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 or Trig/Alg/Geom)

Modified Diploma Requirements  You do not need to pass the State Reading, Math, or Writing Tests  However, you will need to pass essential skills: Reading, Math, and Writing as determined by IEP team  Still need 24 credits  Different amount of certain categories (see slide #6)

SPECIAL EDUCATION CORE CLASSES  English  Language C/D & Literacy C/D  Language E/F & Literacy E/F  Applied Language Arts 1 & 2  Adv. Language Arts  Math  Math Concepts 2M  Adv. Math Concepts 3M  Math for Consumers 1 & 2  All Core Courses can be repeated if deemed appropriate for the student and determined by the IEP team

SPECIAL EDUCATION LANGUAGE ARTS OPTIONS

Language C/D and Literacy C/D GRADE LEVELS: 9 th & 10 th **EVERYDAY CLASS** Counts as elective credit UNTIL student :  passes reading and writing state test and is in regular English junior year and beyond, then it will count as language arts credit OR  is on modified diploma- then it will count as language arts credit PREREQUISITES:  Test into class CURRICULUM:  Language! Book C/D GOALS:  Systematic and thorough instruction in writing, reading, organization, and speaking and listening.  Sentence and paragraph structure, basic phonemic awareness, reading for literal comprehension, and building good study habits.  Writing and reading techniques, such as: word recognition and spelling, vocabulary and morphology, grammar, and usage.

Language E/F & Literacy E/F GRADE LEVELS: 9 th &10 th Counts as elective credit UNTIL student :  passes reading and writing state test and is in regular English junior year and beyond, then it will count as language arts credit OR  is on modified diploma- then it will count as language arts credit PREREQUISITES:  Passed Language C/D  Tested into course CURRICULUM:  Language! Book E/F DESCRIPTION:  systematic and thorough instruction in writing, reading, organization, and speaking and listening.  Sentence and paragraph structure, basic phonemic awareness, reading for literal comprehension, and building good study habits.  Specific writing and reading techniques, such as: word recognition and spelling, vocabulary and morphology, grammar, and usage.  Students may repeat this course at different levels based on instructional need and instructor recommendations.

Adv. LA GRADE LEVELS: 9 th & 10 th Counts as elective credit UNTIL student :  passes reading and writing state test and is in regular English junior year and beyond, then it will count as language arts credit OR  is on modified diploma- then it will count as language arts credit PREREQUISITES:  Passed Language E/F  Tested into course  Almost ready for Regular English class CURRICULUM:  AGS Language Arts Textbook DESCRIPTION:  review the basic skills taught in their language arts concepts and applications class  more advanced writing skills, literary forms, speaking and listening skills, and organizational skills.  the class will be reading a novel and practice identifying foreshadowing, plot map elements, and making predictions.

Applied LA 1 & 2 GRADES: 11 th &12 th (some exceptions for 10th)  Counts as Language Arts credit for Modified Diploma students  Full year rolling 2 year course (1.0 credit-each year) PREQUISITES:  Modified Diploma only CURRICULUM:  Life Skills English DESCRIPTION:  Teach students practical reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to prepare students for life after graduation.  Covers such skills as personal and functional writing, reading for information and enjoyment, and interpersonal skills.

SPECIAL EDUCATION MATH OPTIONS

Math Concepts 2M GRADE LEVELS: 9 th &10 th  Counts as elective credit UNLESS student is on a Modified diploma, then it counts as math credit CURRICULUM:  Transmath 2 PREREQUISITES:  Completed Math Concepts and Applications 1- M.  Tested into class DESCRIPTION:  Includes review of basic arithmetic operations but will move quickly into more advanced work with decimals, percent's, fractions, measurement, statistics and probability, and geometry.  Students will use rounding and estimation to predict answers and check for “reasonableness” of answers, and will learn to use a variety of problem-solving techniques.

Adv. Math Concepts 3M GRADE LEVELS: 9 th &10 th  Counts as elective credit UNLESS student is on Modified diploma, then it counts as math credit CURRICULUM:  Transmath 3 PREREQUISITES:  Completed Math Concepts 2M and 1M  Tested into course DESCRIPTION:  Includes review of rational numbers but will move quickly into working with algebraic expressions.  Students will use a variety of problem solving techniques and be prepared to enter Algebra 1.  Pre Algebra type class

Consumer Math 1 & 2 GRADE LEVELS: 11 th &12 th (some exceptions for 10th)  Counts as Math credit for Modified Diploma students  Full year rolling 2 year course (1.0 credit-each year) PREREQUISITES:  Modified Diploma Students Only DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed to prepare students to use math as consumers and citizens.  The units will cover a wide range of consumer topics including employment compensation, benefits, employment taxes, comparison- shopping, budgeting, banking, investing, and use of credit.

Content Strategies 1 GRADES: 9th & 10th  Counts as elective credit  Full year course PREREQUISITES:  Currently enrolled in a General Education English Class DESCRIPTION:  Course designed to provide:  Support for other general education courses  Instruction and guided practice in reading comprehension of informational and literary text  Instruction on development of paragraph and essay writing skills  Study and Organizational skills

Content Strategies 2 GRADES: 11th & 12th  Counts as elective credit  Full year course PREREQUISITES:  Currently enrolled in a general education English class DESCRIPTION:  Course designed to provide:  Support for other general education classes  Instruction and guided practice in reading comprehension of informational and literary text  Instruction of paragraph and essay writing skills  Study skills

SPECIAL EDUCATION TRANSITION OPTIONS

TRANSITION CLASSES  Transition - means from one stage to the next stage  HS Transition- after high school:  Where are you going to live?  What school, if any, are you going to?  What kind of job are you going to get?  How are you going to get around? Car? Parents? Public Transportation?

Foundations 1 GRADES: 9th & 10th  1 semester class  Counts as elective credit PREREQUISITES: None DESCRIPTION:  Designed for students who need to learn about  personal strengths and weaknesses, to  setting goals, and  develop skills that will help them make good decisions and become more successful students.  In the units, students will gain knowledge of:  their best personal learning style(s)  learn how to improve their organizational and time management skills  test-taking strategies  personal interactions in school

Foundations 2 GRADES: 10th & 11th  1 semester class  Counts as elective credit PREREQUISITES:  None DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed for students who need to learn about:  problem-solving,  self-advocacy  personal  In the units, students will gain knowledge of:  their strengths and weaknesses personal disability  how to speak up for themselves in a school setting  Students will practice developing communication and decision making skills.

Careers GRADE: 11th only  1 semester class  Can count as elective or career development credit PREREQUISITES: None DESCRIPTION:  Designed for students who need to:  assess skills and interests  explore career options  learn how to develop a plan to achieve their post-high school goals  In the units, students will:  complete career interest inventories  explore careers and entry level requirements through a variety of activities.

Transitions GRADE: 12th only  1 semester class  Only offered 1 st semester of Senior year  Counts as elective OR  Career Development credit PREREQUISITES:  12th graders planning on going to a 4 year college or a junior college DESCRIPTION:  In the units, students will learn about:  general and specific college requirements and processes  differences between high school and college  how the law changes from high school to adult settings (IDEIA vs. ADA)  how to access college disability services

World of Work GRADE: 12th only  1 semester course  Only offered 2 nd semester of senior year  Counts as an elective OR  career development credit PREREQUISITES:  Student needs to be going to work right after high school  Could be part time work and part time college DESCRIPTION:  Designed for students who need to develop knowledge and skills required for successful employment.  In the units, students will:  look how and where to find job openings  develop the skills necessary to get and keep a job.
