Sustainable Development

What is substainable Development ? Definition: „Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs“. (Brundtland Commission of the United Nations)

What is substainable Development ? Sustainability has become a wide-ranging term that can be applied to almost every facet of life on Earth, from a local to a global scale and over various time periods. What sustainability is, what the goals are and how they can be achieved is open to everyones own interpretation.

What is substainable Development ? The Earth Charter speaks of “a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace.”

What is substainable Development ? Social Enviroment Economic Definitions of sustainability often refer to the "three pillars" of social, environmental and economic sustainability

What is substainable Development ? Social Enviroment Economic Another representation of sustainability showing how both economy and society are constrained by environmental limits.

Important parts of sustainable development. Social sustainability Social sustainability is one aspect of sustainable development. Social sustainability includes human rights, labor rights, and corporate governance. In common with environmental sustainability, social sustainability is the idea that future generations should have the same or greater access to social resources as the current generation.

Important parts of sustainable development. Economical sustainability Sustainability interfaces with economics through the social and Ecological consequences of economic activity. At present the average per capita consumption of people in the developing world is sustainable but population numbers are increasing and individuals are aspiring to high consumption Western lifestyles. The developed world population is only increasing slightly but consumption levels are unsustainable.

Important parts of sustainable development. Economical sustainability The challenge for sustainability is to curb and manage Western Consumption while raising the standard of living of the developing world without increasing its resource use and environmental impact. This must be done by using strategies and technology that break the link between, on the one hand, economic growth and on the other, environmental damage and resource depletion.

Important parts of sustainable development. Enviromental sustainability Sustainable development of the Earth is a development that meets the basic needs of all human beings and which conserve, protect and Restore the health and integrity of the Earth's ecosystem, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs and without going over the limits of long term capacity of the earth’s ecosystem. (Stappen 2004–2008, S. 25 ff.)

Important parts of sustainable development. Enviromental sustainability In ecology, sustainability describes how biological systems remain biological systems diverse and productive over time. For humans it is the potential for long-term maintenance of wellbeing, which depends on the wellbeing of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources.

Important parts of sustainable development. Enviromental sustainability

What can we do ? Humans have to return to an sustainable use of natural resources. To reach this goal there are many different ways: ▫Reorganising living conditions ( e.g. ecovillages and sustainable cities) ▫Reappraising economic sectors ( e.g. sustainable agriculture) ▫Developing new technologies ( e.g. renewable energy)

What can we also do ? Revive growth Change the quality of growth Meet essential needs and aspirations for jobs, food, energy, water and sanitation Ensure a sustainable level of population

What can we also do ? Conserve and enhance the resource base Reorient technology and manage risk Include and combine environment and economics considerations in decision-making.
