Ocean Zones Sunlit Zone: Top layer, nearest the surface. Enough light to support photosynthesis. Twilight Zone: Small amount of light penetrates the water. Water becomes deeper, and pressure increase, too. Plants do not grow here. Only animals that have adapted to little light survive.
Midnight Zone: 90% of the ocean is in the midnight zone. Entirely dark Midnight Zone: 90% of the ocean is in the midnight zone. Entirely dark. Water pressure is extreme. Temperature is near freezing. Special forms of bacteria use hydrogen sulfide to make food. All other living things in this zone eat the bacteria.
