Presentation by Mrs. Mary Uduma on behalf of ICANN At eNigeria Mary N. Uduma President, NIRA

 Who is ICANN  Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number  Registers Domain Names at the Root  Runs IANA (Internet Assigned Number Authority

 ICANN  Coordinates the unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination, we wouldn't have one global Internet

 In more technical terms, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) coordinates the Domain Name System (DNS), Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, generic (gTLD) and country code (ccTLD) Top-Level Domain name system management, and root server system management functions. These services were originally performed under U.S. Government contract by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and other entities. ICANN now performs the IANA function.

 ICANN registers Domain names like enigeria.com or eNigeria.net  It delegates the registration of country code top level domain (ccTLD), to countries to manage. Eg.ng  In Nigeria, Nigeria Internet Registration Association manages Nigeria’s ccTLD.ng

 While human beings can identify each other by name, or CAC can register company names, the DNS or IP is the registry for computers, machines identify each other with numbers.  The numbers are so long that human beings would find it difficult to remember hence the conversion of the lengthy number to readable words. Instead of it can be easily remembered as

 Generic (gTLD) .com..co..net.,.org..mobi  Country: ccTLD .ng,.uk,.ke;.nz  International Agencies-.int Us Military and Government

 Currently, ICANN had registered  Over 22 Generic top level domain names  Over 250 Country Code top level domain names  US Gov and Military  All Global/Intergovernmental Agencies on INT

 In order to introduce more competition in the generic top level domain name space, ICANN has worked for over 6 years to open up the domain name business  It first introduced Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) for non-Latin characters like the Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, India etc.

 Give opportunity for everyone to have a string as TLD: .delta .ING .Sport .Bank .Islam Applicants Guidebook set out the rules and policies for delegation of new gTLD.

 Anyone, corporate and non-corporate bodies  Currently there over 1900 applied for names that ICANN is processing including IDNs.  Geographic names  Trade marks  Religious  Adults Only  See result/applicationstatus

 The cost of a new gTLD is $185,000.  Initial Deposit on application was $5000  When the rounds open further fee is paid  However, ICANN has made provision for applicants from Developing Countries to the tune of $2,000,000.

On 13 June 2012, ICANN posted all of the applied- for strings to the Application Results page of the site. Total current new gTLD applications: 1924 Total withdrawals: 6 Total change requests submitted: 169 Total change requests approved: 29

 The application comment window closed on 26 September However, the Application Comment Forum will remain open for the duration of the new gTLD program. Comments may still be submitted and will be displayed in the View Comments section of the Forum.

 Entrepreneurship. Create your own business model and establish accessibility policies for your TLD. If your customers want tighter security, make your TLD a high-security zone.  Increased control. You set the rules and the price for those registering your TLD.

 Ongoing revenue stream. Your customers could renew their domain names year after year.  Innovative marketing opportunity. Build better brand definition, brand awareness, brand loyalty and trust by having full control over your own TLD.

 Innovative business models. When new gTLDs combine with other emerging Internet technologies, such as IPv6, RFID chips, and cloud computing, new products and services are possible

 Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). Increase market reach by making the Internet completely accessible to users whose local languages use non-Latin characters.  Engage your community. Create a rallying point for supporters of your cause, community or culture to unite with a community-based TLD.  Bring together your geographic area. Celebrate your local citizens, commerce, activities, and culture with a geographic TLD.

 E-Governance  G2G  G2C  C2G .ng - time to shine  Good brand, names ending in ing,; ang; ong; eng; ung; at cheaper price than the new gTLD of $185K (N29M)  Govt data to seat on.ng than any other string.

 Local content Developers :  Creative Art, Education, Agriculture, Health, Fin Services, Applications. Distributors  Local Hosting, Hugh Market. Local branding,  Resellers  More interesting names than just.com or.net for the untapped Nigerian Market

 Community identity  LGAs,  Councils and Wards  Cultural Expression  250 languages to innovate with .ibo,.igala,.gbagi

 Job Creations and Online Marketing  Borderless Market  Confidence and trust (sure it’s Rolex)  staff for a new gTLD  1000 X10 = 10, 000 new jobs  Reinvestment of Revenues  Unique ness and Excellence

Thank you
