PROFESSOR VALERIE ROBINSON BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE 1 THE 21 IRREFUTABLE LAWS OF LEADERSHIP BY JOHN C. MAXWELL

STUDY THE LAWS FOR YOUR SUCCESS – EACH DAY FOR APPROXIMATELY ½ HOUR

15. The Law of Victory: Leaders find a way for the team to win. They find out what must be done to achieve victory. When the pressure is on, great leaders are at their best. Whatever is inside a leader comes to the surface and works for or against them. Three (3) key traits to victory: 1. Unity of Vision 2. Diversity of Skills 3. Dedication to victory and raising or developing staff, team, players to their potential

16.The Law of the Big (MO) Momentum: Momentum is a Leader’s Best Friend. A leader must be able to get his team, employees, their family excited and moving in the right direction. If you can’t get things going, you will not succeed. Momentum starts with three (3) things: 1. Vision (Clear direction ) 2. Passion 3. Enthusiasm

17. The Law of Priorities: A good leader puts first things first. Leaders must be able to identify what’s important and prioritize things to be done. It’s important to identify the things that need to be completed in a given day. The most important thing should be addressed first. A leader must identify three (3) key things: 1.What is required? 2.What gives the greatest return? 3.What brings the greatest success?

18. The Law of Sacrifice. A Leader must give up to go up. Sacrifice is a constant cost in leadership. Four (4) elements of sacrifice: 1. There is no success without sacrifice 2. Leaders are often asked to give up more than others (responsibility increase/rights decrease) 3. You must continue giving up to stay up 4. The higher the level of leadership, the greater the sacrifice

19. The Law of Timing: When to Lead is as important as what to do and where to go. When a leader makes a move, there are four (4) outcomes: 1. The wrong action at the wrong time leads to disaster 2.The right action at the wrong time brings resistance 3. The wrong action at the right time is a mistake 4. The right action at the right time results in success. (That’s your goal).

TIMING REQUIRES:  Understanding – Firm grasp on the situation  Maturity – If leaders’ motives are not right, their timing will be off.  Confidence – People follow leaders who know what must be done.  Decisiveness – Wishy-washy leaders create wishy-washy followers.  Experience – If leaders don’t possess experience, then they need to gain wisdom from others who do possess it.  Intuition – Timing often depends on intangibles, such as momentum and morale.  Preparation – If the conditions aren’t right, leaders must create those conditions.

20. The Law of Explosive Growth: To add growth, lead followers; to multiply, lead leaders. The ultimate goal of a leader is to develop new leaders. Leaders Who Attract Followers *Leaders Who Develop Leaders* Need to be neededWant to be succeeded Develop the bottom 20%Develop the top 20% Focus on weaknessesFocus on strengths Treat everyone the sameTreat individuals differently Spend time with othersInvest time in others Grow by additionGrow by multiplication Impact only people they touchImpact people beyond their reach

21. The Law of Legacy: The Leader’s lasting value is measured by their succession. There are four (4) important traits to do as a leader: 1. Know and identify the legacy You want to leave 2. Live the legacy you want to leave 3. Choose who will carry on your legacy 4. Make sure you pass the Baton

THE END NOW… LEAD WITH CONVICTION!
