oneone EEM-1A Objective: To analyze the movement of a pendulum in order to describe the relationship between potential energy and kinetic energy in moving objects. CSI Note: What is Energy? Drill: 1. Get a ditto from the SET. 2. Read and highlight, “What is Energy”. 3. Think of questions you now have.

oneone EEM-1A WHAT IS ENERGY? Have you ever thought about.....why you are able to get out of bed in the morning and come to school? Why the alarm clock sounds in the morning? How the toaster toasts bread? How your car runs? How you run? Why your nose runs? How your computer runs? How everything runs? NO, you say? WHY NOT?????? Do you not have enough energy? Funny, I said energy, because that is the answer to all of the questions from above.

oneone EEM-1A Everything runs because of energy. In other words, energy is the stuff that makes stuff do stuff!!!!!! Or in proper scientific talk: the ability to do work or cause change. Work occurs when a force is acting over a distance. A force is any push or pull. In this investigation, you will examine and analyze objects at rest and in motion in order to describe the relationships that exist between the two types of stuff that make stuff do stuff (energy).

oneone EEM-1A Observe the pendulum that your teacher has set up in front of the class. Label the parts of the pendulum. fixed point string, rod, or bar pendulum bob

oneone EEM-1A There are two basic types of energy, kinetic and potential.

oneone EEM-1A KINETIC The word kinetic comes from the Greek word kinetos which means "moving.” Therefore, kinetic energy (K.E.) is simply described as energy of motion. If an object is moving, it has kinetic energy. Two factors that affect the amount of kinetic energy an object has are mass and velocity (speed).

oneone EEM-1A POTENTIAL The other basic type of energy is potential energy (P.E.). Potential energy is the opposite of kinetic energy. Potential energy is energy that exists even when an object is at rest. It can be simply described as stored energy or energy that has the potential to do work. Potential energy can be the result of an object's position, shape, or chemical make-up. Kinetic energy is the result of potential energy being converted to action.

oneone EEM-1A A specific type of potential energy that describes energy of position is known as gravitational potential energy (GPE). Potential energy can be stored in any object just because it occupies a higher position. The higher an object is the more GPE it has. The kinetic energy resulting from the conversion of gravitational potential energy to an object's movement is readily visible.

oneone EEM-1A Furthermore, a simple relationship exists. A falling object has its greatest amount of kinetic energy when it is traveling its fastest. It has the greatest amount of gravitational potential energy when it is at its highest point. An object can have both kinetic energy and potential energy at the same time.

oneone EEM-1A Homework: In your Log Book write 5 examples of kinetic energy and 5 examples of potential energy.

oneone EEM-1A Objective: To analyze the movement of a pendulum in order to describe the relationship between potential energy and kinetic energy in moving objects. CSI Note: What is Energy? Drill: 1. Take out yesterday’s ditto and your homework. 2. Star your best example for both potential and kinetic energy.

oneone EEM-1A Name the two types of energy displayed by the pendulum. KINETIC ENERGY (Energy of motion) POTENTIAL ENERGY (Stored energy) Discussion of HW Answers ( tennis ball game )

oneone EEM-1A BRAIN POP Kinetic Energy Potential Energy

oneone EEM-1A At what points is the potential energy the greatest? At what point(s) is the kinetic energy the greatest? A. B. C.C.

oneone EEM-1A DRY ERASE BOARDS 1.What is kinetic energy? 2.What is potential energy? 3.Give an example of potential energy? 4.Name 3 types of potential energy. 5.Give an example of kinetic energy? 6.What key word is linked to potential energy? 7.Can an object have both forms of energy at the same time?

oneone EEM-1A Discussion Question? Can an object have both potential and kinetic energy at the same time? Can a moving object still have height? Can a moving object still be stretched out or compressed?
