The Unforgettable Rome Civilization By: Mercy Junfandi

Social Classes/Structu re

There are 5 groups of people in Ancient Rome which are the patricians also known as the aristocracy, the plebeians, the clients, the liberti and the slaves. The patricians are the top level of the social class the ones that are in this group are the families that are rule the city. The plebeians are the ones who are free Roman citizen. This class is one more level lower than the patricians. The clients are the ones who come to Rome as a traveler, merchants, traders, etc. The liberti are the ones which are the freed slaves. The slaves are the ones which are own by a person.

They change of the social structure because some of the level of jobs change for example nowadays there are no more slaves. Another example is long time ago in Ancient Rome the Patricians are the ones that are in the top level who rule the city but now the one that have the highest position in the one that owns a company or a entrepreneur.

Rome is a part of Italy as you know. It means that Rome social structure or class is now the same as Italy’s cause the city is a part of Italy. 1. Bourgeoisie (10% of the working population) are the high class people which works as a managing, entrepreneur, president of a company, etc. 2. White-collar middle class (17% of the working population)which are the workers that doesn’t work manually like a program maker. 3. Urban petite bourgeoisie (14% of the working population) which are people that work as employees an employee of a company, waitress, and etc. 4. Rural petite bourgeoisie (10% of the working population) are people that lives in the countryside and works for example a farmer. 5. Urban working class (37% of the working population) which are people that are doing manual work as their job like a craftsman. 6. Rural working class (9% of the working population) consists of people operating in the primary industry, such as farmers, loggers, fishermen etc.

Governmental system

Long time ago in ancient Rome when the city of Rome was first founded kings ruled Rome. But this kind of governmental system is only used for around 200 hundred years. This governmental system is used from 753 B.C. until 509 B.C. Then they change the governmental system few times. But for now I will just be focusing in this governmental system.

The governmental system change from a monarchy to a parliamentary republic because this way it would be so much easier to improve the city from the economical side as well as from the political side. It is also really helpful to full-fill almost everyone’s requirement towards the government.

Rome is now the capital city of Italy which means that it doesn’t have its own governmental system cause it is not a single country. But Rome as a city still have a mayor. The mayor that is in charged now is Ignazio Marino. While Italy is a parliamentary republic it means that Italy have 1 president and 1 prime minister.

Beliefs & Religion

Long time ago during the time of Emperor Nero. People that were Christians or are believing in Jesus Christ could be punish to death. Once Emperor Nero ever burn the city and blame the Christians for doing it. Because Jesus teach us to be pure, to forgive your enemies, be good to everyone, and to worship only one God. They think that the people that belief in this teaching and live in Rome is very unpatriotic. Unpatriotic means that this person is not loyal to his/her culture because they worship other gods not the Roman gods. The Roman gods and goddesses are the same gods as the Greeks gods they just change the name of each god.

Now the citizens can choose their own religion because it would be a huge violation towards the United Nations Human Rights. Because in the United Nations Human Rights it clearly stated that the Human Rights protect your rights to have your own thoughts, belief, and religion.

Now in Rome the citizen could choose any religion they want. But still Roman Catholic is the main religion in this city. For the last few years the number of Muslim in the city is increasing. The cause of this is because there are a huge number of people the are moving from the north African and middle-eastern country where the main religion is Muslim.

Education

Education is very important to ancient Romans. The rich people would sent their child to school or being teach by a private tutor at home. While the poor people doesn’t get any formal education but they are still teach on how to write and read. The school that they use to study is just a special room that is extended from a shop. The boys are the only one that can enter these schools. The school is divided into 2. One is for the boys that is years old. And the other one is for boys that is for the older boys. For the boys that are years old they will learn how to read, write, and basic mathematics by using a abacus.

Studying is Roman school is terrifying. Romans belief that learning is based on fear. So if they don’t understand something they may not ask to the teacher or they will get hit or beaten up by their teachers. And if a pupil always make a mistake over and over again some schools have a policy that 2 slaves will bring to the floor and bow down while the teacher whip the students. Students go to school 7 days a week from when the sunrise until it sets.

They change the way to learn because if they hit the students so that they want to study it will be a huge violation toward the children’s right. The children right is an agreement made by the UNICEF to protect children around the world. So that they are not harmed by the adults or by other people.

Nowadays Rome is the center of excellence education for universities, high school, elementary, and middle school. Rome have many university they have one called the La Sapienza. It is the biggest university in Europe and the second biggest university all over the world.

Languag e

In Ancient Rome Romans learn the Latin language as well as the ancient Greek language. The Latin language is used only for writing. This language is used for over a thousand year. This language is also the source of Italian, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Latin language

They use a different language in Rome now because now one didn’t really use the Latin language. And the ancient Greek language is now modified. Beside that Rome is now a part of Italy so now they need to speak Italian so that they can communicate with each other from the country and to show that Rome is officially a part of Italy.

Now Italian is the language that is dominantly used all over the city. But because this city is one of the city that many tourist visit some people that live near the places that tourist often come they speak English. Although there is a few people that can speak English the ones that live not in near the tourist attractions may not speak English. If you want to ask a person something in English it would be better for you to ask their permission first in Italian because they think it is rude to ask them in English which is a foreign language for them.

Geographical

The Roman empire that started at 27 B.C. until 1453 A.D. reaches its greatest moment when the empire stretches out from the north- Western Europe until around the Mediterranean land. With the capital city, Rome. Some of the modern day countries are also part of the Roman Empire back in the days. Some of them are Great Britain, Greece, Switzerland, and many more.

Rome become smaller because Italy conquer Rome. And make part of the empire different provinces. Some of the part of the Roman empire free themselves including England, Switzerland, Palestine, and Israel.

Rome is now a part of Italy. It is the capital city of Italy. Rome is located in the central western part of the Italian Peninsula. The Italian Peninsula goes into the Mediterranean sea. This city is also crossed by 2 rivers which are the Tiber that runs from the west to the east of the city and the I’Aniene which runs from the north eastern to the north of the city.

Rome In The Future

I think that Rome will be its own country in the future. This new country will stretch from Athens the capital city of Greece until the city of Rome itself. The new country of Rome will be democracy country which means that they will have 1 president and 1 vice president. This country will develop its own language called Romanianey language. This language is a mixed between German and Italian. In Rome the new country there are no more social class it means that all of the citizen have the same position and rights.

This country will be one of the countries that have the greatest educational school. The 70% of the school in this country will use the Calvert School Curriculum a curriculum from Baltimore, Maryland in the USA. The citizen in this country can choose its own beliefs and religion but here is the percentage of the religion in this country: Protestant: 52% Roman Catholic: 40% Muslim: 3% Hindu: 3% Buddha: 2%
