TM Scheduling - Lab Clay Hickling GHD

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Clay Hickling – BIM Project Master - GHD Used Revit for past 6 years Currently have an internal company training and development role with BIM RTC Committee member Keen to share knowledge Architectural and Civil Engineering background Who am I?

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Show of hands… Architect…Structural…Building Services….. Starting out….solid full time user…..guru in the office…. Who are you?

Revit Technology Conference 2010 General Formatting Group Headers Appearance On the sheet Some Customisation Sorting and Grouping Filter Data Manipulation …in 45 mins???? What is Covered?

Revit Technology Conference 2010 General Formatting open file…. ’RTC 2010 – Scheduling.rvt’ Group Headers As the name would suggest it allows you to group columns headings together under a group heading eg. To achieve –swipe over the columns headers you wish to group together. You will then see a ‘Group’ icon in the ribbon. This creates the group header, simply type in the required text. Lets get into it….

Revit Technology Conference 2010 General Formatting Appearance Tab –Try each one….see what happens But look at the end result on the sheet –Setup in the company template Create a View template Apply a View template –and tick ‘Apply automatically to new….’ Lets get into it….

Revit Technology Conference 2010 General Formatting On the Sheet –You control the width of columns on sheet –Select and Split the schedule –Align left edge Still getting into it….

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Customisation Open the file….. ’RTC 2010 – Scheduling.rvt’ Sorting and Grouping Tab –Sort order – straight forward –Headers and Footers –Eg. –Lets have a go… Now for some meatier bits… Header Footer

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Customisation Filters –as the name suggests…use to further control what you wish the schedule to report –Eg.”I only wish to schedule the rooms on the Ground Floor” or “I only wish to schedule the length of walls that have a fire rating over 1 hour.” –Simply duplicate a schedule and apply a filter –Lets give it a try shall we….lets have a schedule only showing rooms on the ground floor Now for some meatier bits…

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Data Manipulation Calculated Value –Creating further data from existing data using formula Eg. –Give me tonnes of steel based on concrete volume –Does the room area meet the clients briefed area –Give me the glazing area on the Eastern wall Now for the fun bit…

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Data Manipulation Calculated Value Example:- “Does the room area meet the clients briefed area” Start with a simple room schedule with Room Name and Area Need to add a parameter for the clients briefed area –In the ‘Fields’ Tab create a new parameter called ‘ Briefed Area ’ –Needs to be of the correct unit type eg Area or Number...otherwise you get inconsistent units –Simply type in the area from the clients brief –Will look at formatting of that column later Then we create a new parameter via the calculated value option –This will be for the ‘ Area Difference ’ –We need to create a formula to calculate the difference of the design area and the clients briefed area…..case sensitive….but there is a new button to help you Now for the fun bit… New for 2011 (Arch at least)

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Data Manipulation Calculated Value Example 2 (do we have time):- “what is the indicative cost of the design” Following on from the last schedule Need to add a parameter for the cost per square metre –Create a new parameter called ‘ Cost per sqm ’ –unit type is ‘currency’ –Simply type what you think are the indicative costs per square metre of each of the room types (schedule keys could be used) –Will look at formatting of that column later Then we create a new parameter via the calculated value option –This will be for the ‘ Indicative Cost ’ –This formula needs to be tricked by dividing by 1 to solve the inconsistent units Now for the fun bit…

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Now for the fun bit… Data Manipulation Now to give it some formatting –Look at units, and decimal places and then totals For the units either utilize the project units settings or… –Override the one particular parameter with your own unit settings –Go to the ‘Formatting’ tab –Select the ‘cost per sqm’ parameter and select ‘Field Format’ –Untick ‘Use project settings’ –This allows you to select the units you would like for that parameter. For the totals…. –If it isn’t already - Go to the ‘Sorting/Grouping’ Tab and turn on a ‘Footer’ and choose the ‘totals only’ option –To see the totals of say the ‘Indicative Costs’ go to the ‘Formatting’ Tab –Select the parameter ‘Indicative Costs’ and then check the box ‘Calculate Totals’

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Data Manipulation Conditional Formatting –does not print –To apply… Go to the ‘Formatting’ Tab Select the field you wish to do some conditional formatting on eg ‘Area Difference’ Buildup the test condition and apply a colour highlight This is new to 2011 Arch and Struc but has been available in MEP 2010 (or the Alt N trick) To take that a bit further…

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Summary Calculate Values very powerful Use them for good ‘rule of thumb’ calculations Challenge yourself on what can be ‘calculated’ Use check schedules These are schedules you may not need to place on a sheet –Eg drawing list with all the titleblock parameters for you to fill in in lieu of going to each sheet –Use them to drive colour fill plans easier –Quick quantity takeoffs –Sanity checks, listing design inputs… Still some formatting limitations Hidden Columns…keep an eye out for them Schedules do get built of parameters that you do not want to see in the final output Hide Rows (Show/Isolate) For items like ‘not placed’ rooms, you can hide these from the schedule rather then deleting them URLs in schedule Allows you to embed websites or internal links to data – for quick reference (use the URL type) Tick box in schedule Yes/No type eg Is room Air-conditioned Too finish...

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Summary MEP – Embedded Schedules Schedule across linked files Still finishing...

Revit Technology Conference 2010 Clay Hickling Questions Hope you were able to take something away from this…
