Chapter 6 Section 6 1

Trapezoid & Isosceles Trapezoid A trapezoid is NOT a parallelogram. A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with exactly ONE pair of parallel sides. An isosceles trapezoid is a trapezoid whose nonparallel sides are congruent.

Properties of a Trapezoid Angles along leg add to 180 All four angles add to 360 If the Trapezoid is isosceles, then base angles are equal and diagonals are congruent.

Kite A kite is a quadrilateral with two pairs of consecutive sides congruent and no opposite sides congruent. A kite has NO PARALLEL SIDES!! So, a kite is NOT a parallelogram!!

Properties of a Kite All four angles add to 360 Diagonals are perpendicular One pair of opposite angles are congruent NO PARALLEL SIDES!!

Trapezoid A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with exactly ONE pair of parallel sides. The parallel sides are called BASES and the nonparallel sides are called LEGS 6

An isosceles trapezoid has congruent LEGS! Base Angles Leg Leg Base Angles Base angles are congruent in an isosceles trapezoid The two angles along the leg add to 180 because they are same-side interior angles. All 4 angles in a trapezoid add to 360 because it’s a 4 sided figure.

We know that the base angles of an isosceles trapezoid are congruent. Find the measures of the numbered angles:

Diagonals of an isosceles trapezoid are congruent Solve for x:

Trapezoid Midsegment Theorem

Find x

Example WXYZ is an isosceles trapezoid with median Find XY if JK = 18 and WZ = 25.

Kites A quadrilateral with exactly two pairs of consecutive congruent sides. NO PARALLEL SIDES!!!

These two angles are always congruent!! These two angles are never congruent All 4 angles in a kite add to 360, because it’s a 4 sided figure!!

The two angles that are NOT congruent are bisected, or cut in half, with the diagonal.

The two angles that ARE congruent are NOT cut in half with the diagonal!!

The diagonals are perpendicular

Find the measures of the numbered angles
