Mountain Life By Giorgio Fenech Junior 2 B

What do mountains look like?  Mountains can be rocky and barren.  Some have trees growing on their sides and some have snow on their peaks.  The top of the mountain is called the summit.  The side of the mountain is called the slope.  A gorge is a very steep valley between young mountains.

Names of Mountains and Mountain Ranges A mountain range is a group or chain of mountains that are close together. Mountain ranges are usually separated from other mountain ranges by passes and rivers. The Himalayas are the highest mountain range in the world. The Himalayas are the great mountain system of Asia. They form a 1,500 mile broad crescent through North eastern Pakistan, Northern India, Southern Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan. The Himalayas is one of the youngest mountain ranges in the world. The Andes Mountains form the longest mountain range in the world.

Sherpa People of the Himalayas Most Sherpa people live in the Nepal's eastern regions; however, some live farther west in the Rolwaling valley and in the Helambu region north of Kathmandu. RolwalingHelambuKathmandu

Mountain Goats  Mountain goats live in the United States and Canada. In Idaho, most goat populations are located in the central part of the state.  Mountain Goats can be found in the steep rocky areas of the White Clouds, the Sawtooths, Seven Devils, and Bitterroot Mountains. The Selkirk Range in Northern Idaho also plays host to Mountain goats.

Golden Eagles  The Golden Eagle is a huge bird of prey, with only the white-tailed eagle larger in the UK.  With its long broad wings and longish tail, it has a different outline to the smaller buzzard.  It likes to soar and glide on air currents, holding its wings in a shallow ‘V’.  Eagles have traditional territories and nesting places which may be used by generations.  They have been illegally killed in the past and are still occasionally poisoned, or have their nests robbed.

Mountain Gorilla There are roughly 700 mountain gorillas remaining on Earth, and nearly half live in the forests of the Virunga mountains in central Africa. These gorillas live on the green, volcanic slopes of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo—areas that have seen much human violence from which the gorillas have not escaped unscathed.

Mountain Lion  Area: North and South America  Habitat: Forests, swamps, and grasslands  Food:  Deer, pigs, raccoons, armadillos, rabbits, squirrels, and other mammals Size:  6 to 9 feet long; about 2 feet tall at the shoulder Babies:  A litter of 3 to 4 spotted cubs is born in a den. A mountain lion can jump 18 feet from the ground into a tree!

Llamas in the Andes Mountains High in the Andes Mountains, llamas have been helping people carry their wares for thousands of years. The llama (pronounced "yama"), is a member of the camel family, and is one of the oldest domesticated animals. Their thick coats of wool and honed survival instincts enable them to thrive in one of the most extreme climates on earth.

Bears Bears are curious, intelligent and potentially dangerous animals, but undue fear of bears can endanger both bears and people. Many bears are killed each year by people who are afraid of them.
