Chapter 10 Graphing in the Coordinate Plane
Chapter 10 Section 10-1 Objective: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to Locate a point on the coordinate plane Graph points on the coordinate plane Graph vertical and horizontal lines on the coordinate plane
Chapter 10 Section 10-1 Agenda – Anticipation Guide-Before column – Vocabulary – Examples – Practice – Classwork/Homework – Anticipation Guide-After column
Vocabulary Coordinate Plane – a grid formed by a horizontal number line called the x- axis intersecting with a vertical number line called the y-axis The lines are perpendicular to each other
Vocabulary x-axis – horizontal number line y-axis - vertical number line
Vocabulary Origin – O indicates the origin, where the axes intersect
Vocabulary Ordered Pair (x,y) – gives the coordinates of the location of a point The ordered pair (0,0) indicates the origin O Ordered pairs look like: (2,3) – The first component is the x value and the second component is the y value – They are always separated by a comma and enclosed within parentheses
Writing Coordinates Example A(-2, 2) B(-3, -2) Locate the coordinates of points A and B
Vocabulary x-coordinate – the first number in an ordered pair It tells the number of horizontal units a point in from O y-coordinate – the second number in an ordered pair It tells the number of vertical units a point in from O
Vocabulary Quadrants – the x- and y- axes divide the coordinate plane into four quadrants
Graphing a Point Example Graph point A(3, -4) Graph point B(3, 4) Graph point C(-3, -4) Graph point D(-3, 4) What quadrant is each point located?
Graphing a Point – More Examples Graph point w(0, 0) Graph point x(0, -2) Graph point y(3, 0) Graph point z(-1, 4)
Vocabulary Horizontal – lines that are parallel to the x-axis Vertical – lines that are parallel to the y-axis
Indentifying Horizontal and Vertical Lines Graph the line containing points (-3,3) and (-3, 2) Graph the line containing points (3, 2) and (-1, 2) Which line is horizontal? Which line is vertical?
Indentifying Horizontal and Vertical Lines Graph the line containing points (-4,3) and (-4, -2) Graph the line containing points (3, 1) and (-1, 1)

Conclusion We learned how to – Locate a point on the coordinate plane – Graph points on the coordinate plane – Graph vertical and horizontal lines on the coordinate plane Tomorrow we will begin to use plotting points and lines to begin a project
