INTERVIEW ESSENTIALS

BE PREPARED  Resume and references  Professional appearance: Appropriate clothing and shoes  Proper Grooming and personal hygiene: Makeup, jewelry, hair and nails  Appropriate Presentation: Handshake, posture, eye contact, smile

8 INTERVIEWING TIPS AND TECHNIQUES Interviewing is a skill you can learn. With the right tips and techniques, you can become a master at sharing your value with potential employers, presenting yourself effectively at interviews, and getting the job you want.

TIP 1: INTERVIEW FOR AS MANY JOBS AS YOU CAN Limiting your job search limits the possibilities. Remain open-minded. Do not overlook what may be a wonderful opportunity. Don't dismiss opportunities to interview because you think the job may not be ideal.

WHY SHOULD YOU INTERVIEW AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE? You need the practice. You need to refine your story and improve your communication skills, which require practice.  Interviewing will refine your job search.  Interviewing will make your network stronger.

TIP 2: BE PREPARED Interviews allow you to demonstrate that you are the right candidate for the job.

TIP 3: ANTICIPATE LIKELY QUESTIONS Sample behavioral interview questions include: 1.Describe a situation in which you didn’t meet your stated goal, how did you handle it? 2.Tell us about a situation in which you encountered resistance from key people, how did you convince the person or people to do what you wanted? 3.Describe a situation in which you took the initiative to change a process or system and make it better, how did you identify the problem? How did you go about instituting change?

COMMON INTERVIEW QUESTIONS Why should we hire you? Why did you leave your last job? What is your greatest weakness? Why do you want to work here? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What do you know about this company? How would you handle a difficult co-worker? Why do you think you would like this particular job? How would your last manager/teacher describe you?

“TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF”  Rehearse your answer.  Keep it professional.  Discuss your school/work accomplishments.  Talk about your relevant professional goals.  Be thorough but brief.

TIP 4: PREPARING GOOD INTERVIEW ANSWERS  Review your research about the company and the position.  Write sample interview questions that are likely to uncover the attributes you identified as important.  Create answers to the sample interview questions following this format: “Situation – Action – Result” with specific details from your work experience.  Practice answering the interview questions and follow-up questions.

TIP 5: ASK QUESTIONS DURING THE INTERVIEW Being prepared and asking great questions about the position and the employer shows your interest during the interview. By the time you reach the interviewing stage, you should be clear about what you offer to the company.

QUESTIONS TO ASK POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS IN JOB INTERVIEWS What results are expected? What does a typical week look like? What are your goals for the department? What is your philosophy regarding on-the-job growth and development? The people who do well at your company: what skills and attributes do they usually have?

TIP6: DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOUR REFERENCES Get in touch with your references right away to seek help and to avoid surprises on either side.

TIP 7: BOOST YOUR EQ Having a moment-to-moment awareness of your emotions and how they influence your thoughts and actions—is the key to understanding yourself and others.  Recognize emotional states of others.  Engage with people in a way that draws them to you.  Pick up on emotional cues, communicate effectively, and develop strong relationships.

TIP8: MANAGE STRESS All our best intentions go out of the window when we’re overwhelmed by stress. It’s only when you’re in a calm, relaxed state that you can think on your feet, and provide clear answers to an interviewer’s questions. By reducing potential stress, you can maintain a relaxed, energized state of awareness–even when faced with challenging questions–and remain focused and engaged.

TO MANAGE INTERVIEW STRESS: BE PREPARED  Choose appropriate clothing the day before.  Research the company in advance.  Practice your interview answers in advance.  Have a few questions in mind to ask.  Be sure to have reliable transportation and arrive early.  Relax- you are well prepared.
