Writing and illustrating an ‘Oliver Jeffers’ styled children’s book! Mr. Cole’s Guide to… Part 4 – Page Breakdown & Layouts

Task 6: Page Breakdown In a ‘picture book’ the writing must accompany the pictures. Your next task is to ‘break down’ your story into important parts. Each part will have an accompanying illustration. You can have one picture per page and up to two pieces of text per picture. You have a word limit of 40 words per page. Here are a some examples of how Oliver Jeffers has placed text with his images:

Page Layouts: Things to think about… 1: The text describes the action in the image… and vice versa! Word count: 19! 2: Jeffers leaves empty space on the picture for the text.

Word count: 17! 2: Jeffers leaves empty space on the picture for the text. 1: The text describes the action in the image… and vice versa!

Word count: 33! 2: Jeffers leaves empty space on the picture for the text. 1: The text describes the action in the image… and vice versa!
