Great Lakes of the World

A slow-moving or standing body of water surrounded completely or nearly completely by land What is a lake?

Lakes visited by the class

Why do People Live Near Lakes?  Why are lakes important?  Why have great civilizations begun near large lakes?

Lakes are… Lakes are bodies of water that collect in large dips or depressions in the land. These dips or depressions are called basins Lake basins are surrounded on all sides by land. They collect water from 1.rain 2.melting snow and glaciers 3.river water 4.underground springs

Formation of Lakes Lakes form in many different ways 1.Barrier lakes - is a man made reservoir 2.Rift-valley lakes (Lake Tanganyika) 3.Erosion lakes - A lake, in a bowl- shaped basin worn away by a glacier. 4.Basin Lakes The depression in the Earth's surface occupied or formerly occupied by a lake and containing its shore features.

 Africa is known for three great lakes 1.Lake Victoria 2.Lake Chad 3.Lake Tanganyika Lakes of Africa

 Africa’s deepest and longest lake  A large variety of beautiful fish live in the lake  It is surrounded by mountains  It is a rift-valley lake (long and narrow) Lake Tanganyika

 Many centuries ago the Earth’s surface cracked open and separated the mountains that are now on the edge of the lake  Gradually, the edges of the cracks pulled farther apart  Next, the ground dropped down many hundreds of feet and began filling up with water How did Lake Tanganyika form?

 It is a freshwater lake  Fish are a valuable resource  The lake touches four different countries: Zaire, Tanzania, Burundi, Zambia  It is a good transportation route Facts about Lake Tanganyika

 Lake Victoria is located to the northeast of lake Tanganyika  It is the second largest lake in the world  Largest lake in Africa  It is the source to the famous Nile River  It is a basin lake  It is a freshwater lake Lake Victoria

 Lake Victoria is near Mount Kilimanjaro  The lake is named for Queen Victoria of England (1800’s) when Europe first came to the lake  Many islands are in the lake Lake Victoria

 One of the small rivers that flow into Lake Victoria is the beginning of the Nile  Water flowing out is called Victoria Nile River  That river is small near Lake Victoria but becomes bigger by the time it reaches Sudan. It then is called the White Nile  It joins the Blue Nile flowing out of Ethiopia and becomes the Nile flowing northward through Egypt Lake Victoria and the Nile

 Located in western Africa  It is a basin lake  It is shared by several countries: Chad, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon  It is dry, hot and flat there  Temperatures can reach 100 ° F  It is a freshwater lake Lake Chad

 Lake Chad is very shallow  Many cattail, papyrus, and waterlilies grow there.  Fish are a huge resource Lake Chad

 Ancient civilizations lived along the lake hundreds of years ago  Farmers near Lake Titicaca raise llamas  Potatoes (or papas) are grown near the lake  First potatoes in the world were grown here Lakes of South America Lake Titicaca

 Resources from the lake  Fish for food  Water to drink and for crops  Reeds for furniture and boats Lakes of South America Lake Titicaca

 Located in Venezuela  It is actually a GULF (look at your definition of gulf) Lakes of South America Lake Maracaibo

 Rich in petroleum deposits under the water and along the shore  Many oil derricks, or tankers, are in the lake, or gulf  The oil has helped provide money to Venezuela  Huge city  Own university  Many different industries Lakes of South America Lake Maracaibo

 Industries that come from petroleum  Plastics  Paint  Gasoline Lakes of South America Lake Maracaibo

 Lake Superior  Largest lake in the United States  Pleasant place to fish and sail in the summer  In the winter is known as the Graveyard of Ships  Known for wild winter storms and hurricane-force winds  1975, story of the ship, The Edmund Fitzgerald Great Lakes of North America

 The Great Lakes  Lake Superior  Lake Huron  Lake Erie  Lake Ontario  Lake Michigan Great Lakes of North America
