Essential Question? Essential Question How does human impact affect animals habitat worldwide?

China Animal: Giant Panda Location: Mountain forest of southwest China Endangered Species: Only 1600 living in the wild Conservation status: One of the main reasons pandas have become endangered is habitat destruction. Because China is consistently growing, pandas’ habitats are being destroyed for development, pushing them into smaller and less livable areas. These destructions can also lead to food shortage. Pandas eat several different types of bamboo that grow at different times of the year. If one of these types of bamboo is destroyed by the development, then the pandas will not have anything to eat during the time of bloom, which can lead to starvation. What can we do to help? Wildlife reserves have been set up in parts of China to help make sure the pandas have a home and food to survive in the wild. Donations or adopting through World Wildlife Fund is a great way to help save this animal. Researchers are continuing to study how these animals breed in efforts to increase the population.

Australia Animal: Tasmanian devil Location: Tasmania The Tasmanian devil is on the endangered animal list and lives in Tasmania. Tasmania is a island off of the coast of Australia. Tasmanian devils did live in the mainland Australia but are not found there anymore. One of the biggest problems they face today is deforestation, depriving them of natural food and shelter. Also roads are being built near their habitat and they are being hit by cars as a result. Humans migrating towards Tasmanians habitat also hurt the animals because they cannot co-exist with humans because they can harm us, as a result they are often killed if found. How can we help? - We can help to protect their natural habitat by making it illegal to cut down forest that is vital to their survival. We could also have a preservative where Tasmanian Devils can live and flourish without the effects of humans.

Africa Animal: Cheetah Location: Plains of Africa Endangered Species: 8,000 to 10,000 left today Conservation Status: Cheetahs are endangered due to habitat loss caused by human expansion. Humans poach cheetahs for their highly valued pelts. Their prey has been over hunted by people as well as farmers killing cheetahs to protects their livestock. Their main demise though is the competition for space between humans and cheetahs How can we help? We can reconstruct their habitats all together by reforming the plains of Africa by simulating the arid environment and hot climate. An even better idea would be to have designated areas restricted for wildlife only, similar to America’s National Park System. Legal issues would also resolve cheetah endangerment. For instance, trophy hunting could be outlawed as well as making it illegal to buy or sell pelts.

Antarctica Anaratica Animal: penguin Location: Antarctica Human impact: fishing, pollution Affects: -fishermen have a profound effect on penguins primary source of food because they fish for krill and shrimp. -air pollution affects the temperature causing it to rise, thus causing the ice to melt and waters to warm. -trash and other pollutants dumped in rivers find their way to oceans, which soon or later reach aquatic animals and cause bodily harm or even death. Solutions: -put a limit on when and where it's ok to fish for shrimp. -find any even better food source for the penguins -find better methods of getting rid of trash.
