ESPAÑOL II Verbs Followed by Infinitives

Most of the time, when you use a verb you will need to conjugate it. Ejemplo:  Juana lava los platos.  Luis y yo ponemos la mesa. However, sometimes you will use a verb that requires an infinitive after it.

What is an infinitive? It’s the form of the verb that does not have a subject. In other words, there is no action.

How do you know an infinitive? It will always have an –ar, -er, or –ir at the end.

Verbs that require infinitives after them tener que To have to tener ganas de To feel like ir a Going to (do something) deber Should Hay que One has to…

Verbs that can have an infinitive after them (but don’t require them) querer (ie) to want to gustar to like pensar (ie) to think poder (ue) to be able to (can) preferir (ie) to prefer

Remember, in general each simple sentence needs only one conjugated verb.  Simple sentence: Yo hago la cama. If you start combining sentences, you may have more than one verb conjugated.  Combined sentence: Yo hago la cama y Luisa tiene que pasar la aspiradora.
