We make Present Continuous by adding “ing” to the base verb. But what are the rules? Base Verb + ing Work -> Working Speak -> Speaking Sleep -> Sleeping Walk -> Walking Paint -> Painting Clean -> Cleaning If the word ends in vowel + consonant + e, omit the e Write -> writing Come -> coming Make -> Making Take -> taking VERB + ING
If the base verb ends in consonant + stressed vowel + consonant, double the last letter Stop -> stopping (last syllable of the verb is stressed) Run -> running Begin -> beginning (last syllable of the verb is stressed) Sit -> sitting Open -> opening (last syllable of the verb is NOT stressed so the rule doesn’t apply) If the base verb ends in ie, change the ie to y Die -> dying Lie -> lying EXCEPTIONS
