Week 2 Grammar PRESENT CONTINUOUS

 I am standing in front of my students.  We are listening to Ms. Piper in class.  My daughter is talking on the phone right now.  I am driving home and listening to the radio.  My wife is making dinner at home.  I am going to work tomorrow morning.  She is playing soccer with friends tomorrow at the park.  We are visiting our family in California in the summer.  My sister is teaching me piano. WHAT IS PRESENT CONTINUOUS?

 I am running.  You are running.  He is running.  She is running.  We are running.  They are running.  It is running.  I am cutting fruit.  You are cutting fruit.  He is cutting fruit.  She is cutting fruit.  We are cutting fruit.  They are cutting fruit. BE VERB + V-ING

 We make Present Continuous by adding “ing” to the base verb. But what are the rules?  Base Verb + ing  Work -> Working  Speak -> Speaking  Sleep -> Sleeping  Walk -> Walking  Paint -> Painting  Clean -> Cleaning  If the word ends in vowel + consonant + e, omit the e  Write -> writing  Come -> coming  Make -> Making  Take -> taking VERB + ING

 If the base verb ends in consonant + stressed vowel + consonant, double the last letter  Stop -> stopping (last syllable of the verb is stressed)  Run -> running  Begin -> beginning (last syllable of the verb is stressed)  Sit -> sitting  Open -> opening (last syllable of the verb is NOT stressed so the rule doesn’t apply)  If the base verb ends in ie, change the ie to y  Die -> dying  Lie -> lying EXCEPTIONS

 _______ they coming over for dinner?  Max _____ not sleeping on our couch.  My mother-in-law ______ staying at our house this week.  I ____ _______ (eat) my dinner right now.  My sister _____ __________ (learn) Spanish.  I ___ _________(work) at the hair salon this week.  They ____ _________(open) a new Mexican restaurant at Northgate Mall.  Nelson ___ ________(lie) in his bed.  My wife ____ ___________(take) a shower.  My classmates ____ _____________(speak) English to one another in class.
