P ARTICIPATION Survivor Grade based on effort, not accuracy or pronunciation

S URVIVOR Described by the Indiana University of Pennsylvania's College of Humanities and Social Sciences as "Revolutionizing" in the teaching and learning of a second language. Adapted from Kevin and Tammy Lyons 2 nd year teaching this way to a Level 1 Class Simulated Immersion

S URVIVOR 1. What exactly is Survivor? "Survivor" is a method used in my class that requires students and teacher to converse while only using the Spanish language. The "game" is the constant process of the implementation of this method during class. The teacher and students are required to conduct the entire class (every class) while only speaking Spanish. Students receive "Leones" (my own currency) for participating in Spanish. At any time during any class, should a student speak English they would be "fined" a certain number of "Leones" and if they cannot afford the fine they are eliminated from the game. Whenever they accumulate enough "Leones" to pay their fine, they are then permitted back into the game.

S URVIVOR 2. What students need to do: Do not, under any circumstance, use English during Spanish class. Students may ask to speak English by using Spanish, but I must agree to allow them before they speak English. Students may be able to ask for one word in Spanish, and only one word at a time! Anything more than one word will be considered speaking English and they will be eliminated. Students may not under any circumstance use what is considered " Spanglish ", if it is not Spanish they will be eliminated.

S URVIVOR 3. What happens if they are out: If a student cannot pay the fine they have received for speaking unpermitted English, they are eliminated from the game until they have accumulated enough "Leones" to pay their fine and return to the game. Eliminated students will not be eligible for certain games during class and rather will be asked to do a worksheet. 4. What happens when they speak English after they are out: The fine for students will continue to increase if English is still spoken once eliminated from the game. They may have to do an extra assignment during classroom competitions and/or games.

S URVIVOR 5. Why? -There is no better way to learn Spanish! If you give true effort in this game you will succeed and you will learn to speak Spanish! How do I know for a fact that everyone can do it? Because you all learned English in this manner! If you can learn English you can learn Spanish!! It is as simple as that. KEYS TO SUCCESS: 1. Keep your participation up 2. Don't speak English

T HANK YOU FOR COMING THIS EVENING ! I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO A SUCCESSFUL AND ENJOYABLE YEAR WITH YOUR CHILD ! Contact info:
