The Library Management System The Library uses ALEPH (Ex Libris) integrated management system in order to organize acquisitions cataloging circulation course reserves OPAC 11

The Classification System In order to organize the books on the shelves, the UoC Library has adopted the Library of Congress Classification System for medical books: the National Library of Medicine Classification System 12

Loans - Holds - Renewals All members of the University may borrow the material of the Library Borrowing is not transferable and requires the academic identity card Holds are possible in case the material is currently not available Renewals are possible when the material does not hold requests 13

Interlibrary Loan When the Library does not have a book or document, conference proceeding etc: it is possible to supply it from other Libraries, through national & international interlibrary loan networks the cost of the service is covered by the User 14

Reference and User Instruction everyday support to the users on the use of the Library the use of the electronic resources their bibliographic searches training seminars throughout the academic year on Library services and electronic resources

European Documentation Center Rethymnon located in Rethymnon Library (2nd floor) founded in 1999 hosting material related to the European Union monographs and leaflets official documents journals & newspapers

Rare Books – Preservation lab Rethymnon Restoration and disinsectisation of old and damaged material by specialized library staff  

Technical Infrastructure fully equipped computer room and short stay workstations in the main Library area printers (black-white & colour) scanners photocopying machines wireless network 18 18

Printing and Photocopying Management System It is based on open source software and has been developed by the IT Research and Development Unit of the Library the users credit a personal account the University of Crete members just need to login to their email accounts @uoc guest accounts are created for visitors 19 19

Wireless Network It is available all around the Library Building the University of Crete members use their email @uoc to connect for visitors guest accounts are given if needed 20 20

Library Catalog It lists all books, journals, dictionaries, cd-roms and other holdings of the Library: integrated search for UoC Heraklion & Rethymnon, FORTH and Natural History Museum of Crete information about availability and location of the material 23

Course Reserves Subset of the Library system with information on the course reading of the University of Crete Departments, maintained by the Library it currently holds information for 224 courses of Heraklion Departments 153 courses of Rethymnon Departments it is connected to the Library Catalog it is updated every semester 24

Electronic Journals and Books Integrated catalog of subscriptions and open access titles maintained by the Library >26.000 e-journal titles > 52.000 e-book titles controlled access: through the University of Crete Network 25

Bibliographic Databases Specialized tools in order to trace scientific bibliography of all disciplines through keyword searching with abstracts and / or full text multi-disciplinary or specialized controlled access: through the University of Crete Network 26

Ε-locus: Institutional Repository It is based on open source software and has been developed by the Library It hosts all assignments laboured in the University of Crete Departments today it consists of 2.906 master’s dissertations 1.165 doctoral dissertations 689 other documents to be added in the near future: 31.000 research publications of the UoC 27

Anemi: Digital Library of Modern Greek Studies It is based on open source software and has been developed by the Library digitized books, articles and other material related to Modern Greek Studies today it includes 13.894 digital items 2.000.000 digitized pages 28

Livesearch: federated bibliography search It is based on open source software and has been developed by the Library It is a search engine for simultaneous bibliographic search in selected scientific resources: - library catalog, e-journals and e-books - bibliographic databases, other library catalogs, digital collections etc 29
