PSHE – Tobacco Education Smoking – Long and Short Term Effects on Individuals and Others Yr 9 Lesson 1

PSHE – Tobacco Education Lesson Objectives: To know of some of the long and short term effects of smoking on the individual and others. To be aware of the dangers of passive smoking (second hand smoke). To understand some of the environmental effects of smoking. To develop confidence and the skills of negotiation and assertion.

PSHE – Tobacco Education Intended Learning Outcomes: Pupils will have: Written and answered questions about the health effects of smoking. Define the term ‘passive smoking’. Used basic strategies of assertion to negotiate situations. Categorised the health effects of smoking.

PSHE – Tobacco Education Success Criteria: Know at least 3 long term effects of smoking. Know at least 3 short term effects of smoking. Realise some of the implications that smoking has upon the environment. Be able to use strategies to negotiate situations with confidence.

PSHE – Tobacco Education Long and Short term Health Effects of Smoking Can you come up with one or two questions about the health effects of smoking? Are you sure of the answers?

PSHE – Tobacco Education Passive Smoking also known as Second Hand Smoke (SHS) “Breathing other people's smoke is known as passive, involuntary or secondhand smoking. It can also be called ‘environmental tobacco smoke’.”

PSHE – Tobacco Education SHS is a mixture of air-diluted ‘sidestream’ smoke from the burning tip of a cigarette, and the exhaled ‘mainstream’ smoke exhaled by the smoker. SHS has immediate health effects. It can reduce lung function; exacerbate respiratory problems; trigger asthma attacks; reduce coronary blood flow; irritate eyes; and cause headaches, coughs, sort throats, dizziness and nausea. It also has long term health effects …
