Sign off mentors What NMC criteria have to be met in order for a midwife to be placed on the sign off mentor register? What criteria have to be met for a midwife to remain on the sign off mentor register ?

Mentorship Qualifications Full taught and APEL Mentorship modules at level 6 (degree) and level 7 APEL screening now done by Education Co-ordinators in the Trust. Midwife must submit on-line application. Trust must submit on-line electronic nomination. What other qualifications meet the NMC (2008) requirements?

Triennial Review – a recap All buddy/ sign-off mentors to maintain ‘Record of Mentor/Practice Placement Educator Activity document (may also be known as ‘Mentor Passport’) Keep record of learners supported, updates attended, sign-off episodes (if buddy), evidence from learners Annual mentor update, 2 Midwifery students (pre-reg/ SoM/ RTMP) in 3 years to maintain status Triennial review needed every 3 years (all sign-off mentors MUST have one this year if has been a sign-off mentor for 3 years and not had review yet)

Mentor support via Placement Development Team (PDT): Trusts divided into 4 regions: Somerset, North and East Devon, South and West Devon, Cornwall Each region has a PDT comprising an Academic Lead, and a Practice lead who head up the team in each Trust Supported by an Academic team from all professions N.B. Midwifery link lecturers / student personal tutors are the main point of contact for support in the first instance

Mentor Support On-line Additional Link: http://www1.plymouth.ac.uk/placements/poppi/Pages/default.aspx Other sign-off mentor/s Clinical staff including Supervisor of Midwives, PDM, Managers Programme Lead / Lead Midwife for Education University Student Services

Curriculum Update September 2008 / 2013 curriculum Practice placements Student Midwife Caseloading Grading of practice and mentor ‘feedforward’ Investigations and support Timesheets Changes to personal tutor/ link lecturer approach

2013 curriculum specifics WE ARE NOW IN YEAR TWO OF THIS CURRICULUM 55% Practice: 45% Theory Merged modules and removal of all 10-credit modules Reduction to 5 modules per year Midwifery-specific modules in year 1 Earlier practice placement in year 1 (November) Shared research module in years 2 and 3 New year 3 modules – theory related to Newborn and Infant Examination and approved module for Mentorship New version practice e-portfolio (Pebblepad) – use the evidence for assessments

Mentor Assessment of Proficiencies (MAP) in the OAR Initials by sign-off / designated buddy mentors. Remember that only the sign-off mentor can confirm achievement / non-achievement in overall comment and award grade. All statements must be initialled and dated, and evidence and sign-off mentor signature must appear on each statement. Grades for all criteria must be signed by sign-off mentor, student and midwifery lecturer at tripartite. Omission of any will result in referral in the module.

Example of MAP criterion 1:Follows Trust guidelines and policies to meet service needs 2:Can manage workload and make decisions 3:Demonstrates the ability to manage risk Initials Date Appropriately utilises policies and guidelines in the delivery of care for both low and high-risk women and their fetuses/ babies JB 7/6/14 Is able to prioritise and plan workload with minimal supervision when providing normal care, and under direct supervision when there are risk factors PJ 19/5/14 Can state the role of the Supervisor of Midwives 2/4/14 Has attended one of the following and reflected upon the learning gained: Clinical audit meeting Labour Ward case discussion meeting Perinatal meeting Other (please specify) 10/5/14 Understands the clinical risk reporting system: Incident reporting Risk assessment Risk management Evidence of achievement I have seen Emma access policies on induction of labour and Streptococcus B management. Other midwives have commented that she always asks if a policy exists. Penny Jones (buddy mentor) commented on her ability to manage her workload on a very busy day (see page 29 and above), when very little supervision was needed. Emma seems to be very conscious of the importance of risk management and has attended some relevant meetings in this placement. She has been able to discuss key issues highlighted. I have read a reflection written by Emma which clearly demonstrated her awareness of appropriate risk assessment. All midwives she works with say she is very safe. Sign-off Mentor………Julie Brown………… Date……..7/6/14… Comment if not achieved Sign-off Mentor…………………………… Date……………….. Example of MAP criterion CRITERION 8 Risk Assessment and Management Skills (Year Two)
