 Look at the top of page 13 of your textbook..let’s analyze items a, b, c and d… a) Abdullah worked for a big camera company for years. b) My friend in Boston. c) He’s tired. d) Teaches mathematics to students at a good college in Massachusetts. 1. which ones are sentences? 2. Which are NOT sentences? How do you know??

Every sentence in English has a subject and a verb. e.g. He works. They play. subject verb subject verb A sentence may have only a subject and a verb, but usually, there are other words in the sentence. e.g. - He works for an employment agency / at the camera shop. - They play basketball at the club every Saturday.

The Subject  The subject is the person or thing the sentence is 'about'. Often (but not always) it will be the first part of the sentence. The subject will usually be a noun or a noun phrase (a noun and the words, such as adjectives, that modify it) followed by a verb. - He works for an employment agency / at the camera shop. - They play basketball at the club every Saturday.

 In commands, we do not say or write the subject but the subject of the sentence will be always understood as “YOU” e.g. Answer the want ads. = “YOU” answer the want ads.  Subjects come before the verb and often come at the beginning of the sentence: e.g. Saeed told me it was a great job. subject verb

 Subjects can be one word or many words.. e.g. Saeed and Jack told me it was a great job. subject verb They told me it was a great job. subject verb

 Subjects cannot be repeated… We cannot say for example: Saeed he told me it was a great job. In this case, we will have a subject and a pronoun referring to the same subject for one verb. This is not correct. This is different from saying for instance: Saeed and Ahmed told me it was a great job. In this case, we have two different people/doers performing the same verb. This is OK…

 Punctuation Rules: The first letter of any sentence has to be CAPITALIZED. The sentence has to end with a full stop/period {.}; a question mark {?}; or an exclamation mark {!} in order to mark that the sentence has finished. Now it is time to go to page 14 to do exercise 2 with your teacher and friends....good luck..

 Descriptive Adjectives Examples of descriptive adjectives [in red]: yellow banana, tall man, wide door, honest woman, stormy sky Descriptive Adjectives come after verb “to be”.. He is tall. The banana is yellow.

 Descriptive Adjectives Descriptive Adjectives may come before the noun they describe..In this case, we use the articles a, an or the… She is a smart girl. He is an important writer. The new teacher is in class. A, an or the are not used When we do not use nouns after the adjective..e.g. Ali is smart.

 A possessive adjective is usually used to describe a noun, and it comes before it, like other adjectives:  Possessive Adjectives: My, your, his, her, its, our, their…  When we use a possessive adjective, we do not use the articles a, an or the.. e. g. My car is bigger than her car.

Subject pronounPossessive adjective I My You (sing. + plu.) Your (sing. + plu.) WeOur TheyTheir HeHis SheHer ItIts

 I own a laptop. = It is my laptop.  You own this computer. = It is your computer.  My husband owns a car. = It is his car.  My sister owns a lovely wedding dress. = It is her dress.

 My dog owns a collar. = It is its collar.  We are students at king Abdul Aziz University. = It is our university.  My neighbors have a big family. = It is their family.

 Move to page 17. Describe the pictures you see. For each picture write at least three sentences. Use at least one possessive adjective before a noun and one descriptive adjective after be. You can use the following descriptive adjectives: big - dirty - hungry - messy - sad - sleepy – young – curly – happy – long – old – short –straight  Correct the sentences with you teacher…..  Did you get your sentences right?? Good for you….

 Well ladies, now that we have finished our unit for the day…that’s about it….I will have to bid you goodbye for the time being..  Don’t worry, we will meet again the coming class..  Don’t forget to log on in time for our lecture…  I will meet you again..till then..Alsalamualaikom..
