A Little Big of History: A Little Big of History:  At the time of the Spaniard's arrival in 1533 the area was mainly inhabited by the Calamarí, members of the "Karib" language family.  The city is on an island formed by a shallow extension of the harbor. The older part of the city contains two old forts and is surrounded by a wall thick in places, constructed in Spanish colonial times.
