Content Area: Social Studies Grade Level: 2 Summary: The purpose of this instructional power point is to help students gain knowledge and properly identify geographical locations of various rivers in the world. Learning Objective: Given websites that contain facts about the rivers of the world, students will need to interpret the material within the websites to answer the questions within the power point with 100 percent accuracy. Content Standard: 3.0 : Geography enables the students to see, understand and appreciate the web of relationships between people, places, and environments. Students will use the knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts within the six essential elements of geography: world in spatial terms, places and regions, physical systems, human systems, environment and society, and the uses of geography. Learning Expectations: 3.03 Demonstrate how to identify and locate major physical and political features on globes and maps.

 Definition: A river is a body of water that flows in an indention in the land called a channel  The place where a river meets the ocean is called the mouth of the river  The longest river in the world is the Nile River, which flows for more than 4,000 miles in Africa.  The largest river in the world is the Amazon River in South America.  Go to this website to learn more about rivers:

 The United States of America has over 250,000 rivers, with a total of about 3,500,000 miles of rivers.  The longest river in the USA is the Missouri River (it is a tributary of the Mississippi River and is 2,540 miles long), but the biggest in terms of water volume is the deeper Mississippi River.  Rivers provide drinking water, irrigation water, transportation, electrical power, drainage, food, and recreation.  Rivers also erode land and carry it downstream to the sea. This kind of erosion can even form canyons, like the Grand Canyon, and waterfalls, like Niagara Falls.  To learn more about the U.S. major rivers, visit:

Although river water makes up only about 0.2 percent of all the fresh water on Earth, it plays a very important role. Rivers and streams connect with each other in a system called a watershed. To learn more about rivers, visit the following websites:   

Tennessee Tennessee Tennessee Missouri Missouri Missouri Rio Grande Rio Grande Rio Grande Rio Grande Colorado Colorado Colorado
