FACT CPR is a life skill everyone should have. You are most likely to use this skill on a friend or loved one…90% of sudden cardiac arrests (SCAs) happen at home. Getting quick, effective bystander CPR can double or even triple a victim’s chances to survive. The earlier CPR is started the better. Every minute without bystander CPR decreases survival by 10%. CPR: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

5 Fears Video Take out a piece of paper and write your name at the top. Throughout the video, write the name each fear on the paper and take notes on the facts surrounding this fear and/or information about his fear. Once video is over, read slides 15, 16 and 17 to review information from the video and write out any information that you think is important. Keep in mind that we are learning about Hands Only CPR.

5 Fears of Performing CPR or using AED Machine The following video is to put you at ease about some of the fears you may have about performing CPR or taking action during an emergency situation. Remember that we are learning About Hands Only CPR. Clink on the link below. 5 Fears Video

Using your notes, read through the following information and add any important information. Most people are very reluctant to get involved in providing Hands Only CPR and First Aid Why? 1. Lawsuits: Don't be afraid to try to save a life in need of saving because of the fear of getting sued. Each state has Good Samaritan laws that protect you from liability when you voluntarily render emergency aid to another individual. You cannot hurt someone that is already in danger of dying by doing SOMETHING to save their lives. Good Samaritan Law There is a Good Samaritan law in all 50 states that covers you for doing the best job you can do with CPR and the AED, no matter what the outcome is. It does not keep someone from suing you, but should keep a suit from going forward, as long as you do not accept payment for helping. Therefore, liability should not be a concern.

Most people are very reluctant to get involved in providing CPR and First Aid Why? 2. Unsure of Skills: Understand that CPR only slows down the progress from clinical death to biological death but will not stop it! We know any number combination during rescue breaths to compressions will help buy time for EMS to use an AED and ALS to administer medications. The numbers are guidelines, not the rule. (Which is part of the reason why Hands-Only CPR has become such a popular alternative to rescue breathing.) 3. Might Hurt or Kill Patient: This goes hand in hand with number two. The person is already dead. How much worse can the patient physically become? Even Hands-Only CPR is better than doing nothing. It will only help the person to do something rather than nothing.

Most people are very reluctant to get involved in providing CPR and First Aid Why? 4. Disease: This fear has been around for some time and can be solved by ordering a Key-Ring or other accessible CPR shield and protective gloves. That way, you're always prepared for the worst of circumstances. Hands-Only CPR may be a good alternative if you don't have personal protective equipment or don't feel comfortable giving rescue breaths. 5. Unsafe Scene: The only fear that rescuers should be afraid of is the fear of an unsafe scene. Do not become another patient yourself. Make sure, if you're going to enter an area to rescue someone, that the surrounding area is safe enough so that you don't become another victim.

Day 1 TOTD Ticket Out the Door On the back of your 5 Fears paper, answer the following question. Turn into teacher as your Ticket Out The Door. What are some of the fears you may have in performing the emergency tasks? Why?

Day 2 Watch the following video by clicking on the red link below from the American Heart Association on Hands Only CPR Hands Only CPR PSA A Modern Woman Struts Her Stuff with Jennifer Coilidge (approx.. 30 second video with Jennifer Coolidge)

CPR The following video is to provide an overview of Hands only CPR. Click on the link below. CPR and AED Use for Schools Part 1- Hands Only CPR (9 min 55 sec)

6 Performance Steps for Hands Only CPR 1. Verbalizes that the scene is safe 2. Checks for response- tap and shout 3. Yells for help and tells someone to phone the emergency response at 911 and get an AED 4. Checks for no breathing or only grasping 5. Locates hand placement for compressions 6. Delivers compressions (100 per minute)

Hands Only CPR in use Since state requires hands only CPR, the mouth to mouth aspect is not part of state requirements and to prevent transfer of diseases. During your practice on the manikin you will NOT be blowing air into Mini-Annie manikin. Remember Hands Only CPR

Lets get ready to Practice Get CPR in the Schools DVD from your Teacher Watch the video segment called Watch Learn Hands on Adult located on the DVD provided by CPR in Schools kit. (approximately 13 minutes 43seconds long) Get manikin from teacher.

Hands Only CPR Practice Place manikin on your desk or floor Watch video segment Practice Adult Hands Only CPR on CPR in the Schools DVD. Practice along with video to work on hand placement, amount of pressure to get manikin to click upon each push on check. Practice 100 beats per minute by moving with the rhythm of Staying Alive by the Bee Gees

Remember… If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 9-1-1 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song "Stayin' Alive." CPR can more than double a person's chances of survival, and "Stayin' Alive" has the right beat for Hands-Only CPR.

Lets see how you did… Practice Hands Only CPR Use Hands Only CPR Checklist to ensure that you have gone through all 6 steps Ask teacher to watch you go through all 6 steps and sign off on checklist that you have successfully completed all steps. On back of this checklist, explain how today’s Hands Only CPR lesson eased some of your Fears associated with using CPR. Turn paper into teacher.

Day 3 Watch the following video by clicking on the red link below from the American Heart Association on Hands Only CPR Two steps to staying alive with Hands only CPR approx. 1 minute PSA video with sporting event fan theme

AED Watch the following video by clicking on the red link below from the American Heart Association on AED use CPR and AED Use for Schools Part 2 AED Use (6 min 54 sec)

AED AED = Automated External Defibrillator An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm. If needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest.

AED Information An AED will not shock someone who does not need to be shocked You just turn it on and follow the voice prompts and pictures on pads Once on, never remove pads or turn it off, it will continue to cycle and recheck the victim every 2 minutes, taking you back to CPR each time

AED Awareness Video All CCSD schools use the Heart Start AED Watch the following video to learn how to use Heart Start AED Heart Start AED Training Video approx. 2 minute

AED Locations Ask a teacher where the AEDs are located in your school. Write the locations on a separate piece of paper.

Just remember… CPR is a life skill everyone should have. You are most likely to use CPR on friend or loved one. 85% of sudden cardiac arrests happen at home. Bystander CPR can double or triple survival rate. Every minute without CPR reduces survival by 10%. You can’t hurt, you can only help!

Day 3 TOTD Ticket Out The Door Using the same piece of paper with AED locations answer the next three statements. List 3 things you have learned. List the terms for the acronyms AED and CPR. List 1 reason why it is important to know Hands Only CPR.

Day 4 Watch the following video by clicking on the red link below from the American Heart Association on Hands Only CPR video for a final review Watch Hands-Only CPR in Action Get Post test from your teacher Good luck!! Turn Post test in to teacher when completed.

Congratulations!! You have completed the Hands only CPR and AED Use lessons which required to receive credit as part of your HS Health course.
