Energy generation in Peru Energy generation capacity Peru’s energy generation capacity is 7158 MW, almost half of this is hydro power Hydropower 45% (2008) Thermoelectric 55% (2008) almost entirely natural gas, only a small fraction is carbon and gasoline Renewable energies Peru recently auctioned 17 hydro power plants There is an energy integration agreement with Brazil with plans to establish up to MW of hydro power 172 MW of wind power, 80 MW solar power and 27 MW biomass was auctioned in MW more renewable energy projects to be auctioned By law, within a couple of years 5 % of the energy has to be renewable. As Peru’s economy is growing and energy consumption as well, it will need to continue promoting renewable energies and auctioning new projects.
