The WHS Plan should include:  Budget  Available resources  Responsibilities  Roles  Goals aimed at improving performance  Timelines when policies or procedures are due for review  Information on planned action, action taken and results  Evaluation procedures 4

The essential steps that should be considered are:  Identifying the hazards to health or safety  Deciding who might be harmed and how  Evaluating the risks  Decide whether existing precautions are adequate  Performing interviews of workers to confirm findings  Recording the findings  Reviewing the assessment and revise it if necessary 5

There are two main reasons for a WHS management system 6 To meet moral responsibilities to provide a safe working environment To meet legal obligations to provide a safe working environment

When setting goals they must be:  Specific  Measurable  Challenging  Realistic  Have a completion date 7

Good WHS performance targets will be SMART: 8 pecific easurable chievable elevant imed

Examples of the relationship between policies, goals and targets:  The operation’s policy is to eliminate workplace injuries  Goal is to eliminate injuries caused by chemicals  The target is to reduce chemical injuries by 50% 9

Key performance indicators, or KPIs, must:  Reflect the operations WHS goals  Be key to its successful achievement  Be measurable  Limited to factors essential in the company’s goals 10

The benefits that arise from a WHS management system include:  Improved employee relations  WHS commitment from the workforce  Improved image through proactively managing WHS  Improved relations with contractors and subcontractors  Improved relations with consultants and suppliers  Improved relations with unions  Reduced workers injuries and WHS disputes  Continuous improvement of WHS within the operation  Competitive advantage  Compliance with WHS law and regulations 11
