Reading and Writing Difficulties among Adults Grundtvig G3 Larnaka 24th - 28th October, 2007

Course objectives To develop more understanding of. the difficulties and fears of some adults as a result of their literacy limitations; the different learning styles; the effect of the limitations on every aspect of an individual's life

To discuss, illustrate and share: Compensatory strategies that could be Proposed to individuals; kind of support and accommodations Squired in the work place; some strategies for developing awareness nationally.

The course will invite participants to share their success stories and to learn from each other's experience; It proposes some solutions / strategies which are of much use for the many, variously challenged individuals.

Literacy is not a luxury - it is a basic need and consequently the challenge is to ameliorate the position of those who were not given appropriate opportunities earlier on. The course aims at increasing awareness of the need to take concrete action to improve the situation.

Course Background This course follows the Forward Project: a 2- year project aimed at identifying how the various countries are supporting individuals encountering literacy difficulties. The Forward Trainer has involved 4 countries, together with the support of yet another 6 in putting together a training course, which uses as a starting point identified needs.

Course content (1) A practical course which allows participants to empaihise with the literacy challenged individual The coui'se will include: -d C.D., -d Course book and -facilitator's notes which will be at the iof group members running courses in their respective countries.

Topics to be covered in this course include: IALS survey Visual, auditory and motor processing difficulties Strategies to support literacy and numeracy Life and workplace strategies Many of the topics will be illustrated via case studies which participants will discuss

The course takes into consideration the needs of the literacy dis advantaged individuals (whatever the reason) and does not focus solely on one group.

The ultimate objective is: -to enable HR managers and those involved in working in adult centres to run this course in the different establishments; -this will raise awareness of difficulties encountered and ease the position of individuals.
