Nature and Environmental Poetry

if a poem is set in the world, it is in part a nature poem. But what qualifies verse to be included in this category so that the reader's first impulse is to identify it within a specific genre?

1. The nonhuman environment is present not merely as a framing device but as a presence that begins to suggest that human history is implicated in natural history.

2. The human interest is not understood to be the only legitimate interest. 3. Human accountability to the environment is part of the text’s ethical orientation. 4. Some sense of the environment as a process rather than a constant or a given is at least implicit in the text

Tribute to the Season. The nature poem also is the oldest in the canon.

Nature Against Human. This type of poem casts a man or woman in a perilous situation,

Human Against Nature. This type of poem reverses the situation, casting a man or woman overcoming a perilous situation or destroying some aspect of nature.

Human-Nature Relationship Typically this poem concerns a person fixing himself or herself in the natural world or contemplating some aspect of nature, longing for its qualities

Nature as Metaphor for the Human Condition. In this poem type, the poet uses some aspect or element of nature to express how it feels to be mortal

Human Encountering Nature. Simply, the poet suddenly beholds an element or aspect of nature as if for the first time, with keen perception

Nature as Reflection of Mood. In this type of poem, the setting is outdoors and the poet describes a personal feeling, not in context with what is seen in nature, but as a backdrop for mood
