BOYS WRITING IDEAS TO ENHANCE ENGAGEMENT USING DIGITAL TOOLS

WHY DO BOYS DISENGAGE WITH WRITING? Audience… Who am I writing this for? What is the point? Purpose… Why am I writing this? Is it authentic?

SAMR – MAKE IT MEANINGFUL Word Processing, publishing, searching Mapping ideas, presenting with prezi, collaborating with Google Docs/Onenote Post video/story for feedback, blog for feedback, e-portfolio for feedback Create an ebook with original images/video, produce a documentary to share, design an animated cartoon.

GAMING TO ENCOURAGE DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE AND STORY SEQUENCING…

USING TELEGAMI OR VOKI: Students bring together their Gamis using imovie or movie maker. They share their YouTube tellagami clip with another class and they respond via their own tellagami (or other tool) eg: character conversations between schools. Can also bring this into one space via google drive or ThingLink.

COMIC LIFE Make your comic come alive with ThingLink ThingLink is an interactive media platform that empowers publishers, educators, brands, and bloggers to create more engaging content by adding rich media links to photos and videos. With 1.5M content creators, ThingLink has become the most popular cross-platform solution and creative community for interactive media. Use ThingLink to create interactive news photography, maps, posters, family albums, infographics, and shoppable product catalogs in minutes! You can keep track of how people interact with your content as it spreads across the web.

I KNOW YOU DON’T HAVE AN IPAD YET… BUT WHEN YOU DO… Superhero comic book maker Create a scene, add some characters, write your story using your finger and the crayon tool. Toontastic This interactive app walks students through the creation of a story: Introduction, Conflict, Challenge, Climax and Resolution. Students choose a setting and drag in some characters from below for each part of the story. The next part is amazingly engaging: students move the characters around with their fingers and verbally narrate what is happening. The app records the action and the students' voice as a small video clip! This becomes the first "scene" in the story. Once all of the elements of the story are completed, you can add music and play it as a short movie! For the writing task, we watch the clip and then retell that part of the story in writing. Because it's in small parts, it wasn't too overwhelming. Because each student made their own unique story, we were able to repeat this writing task many times without students getting tired of it.

MORE IPAD APPS… Storymaker…Storyteller… Kids Write… Write about this…

BUILD YOUR WILD SELF This website allows students to create their wild self. It describes the animal parts they have selected and can be printed. It is a great starter to descriptive writing.

EXPLAIN EVERYTHING!
