Different Habitats Wetlands What is a Habitat? Habitat Video Wetland Habitat What types of animals live in Wetlands? Mosquitoes Dragonflies Frogs Water snakes Muskrats 2
Why are these animals able to survive in Wetlands? Read Aloud These animals adapted to their habitat. Wetland animals do not need as much oxygen because wetlands do not have a lot of it. Some animals can survive in some areas of wetlands, but not others. For example, a duck lives along the shore and in open water, but not usually upland. *Adapt: become adjusted to new conditions.
Different Habitats Continued Forests Grasslands Panda Bear Habitat What types of animals live in the forest? Giant Panda Baboon Fox Gerbil Hare Hedgehog Grassland Habitat What types on animals live in the forest? Bison Brown Bear Kangaroo Leopard Lion Python Zebra 3
Why are these animals able to live in these habitats? Read Aloud Forests Grasslands These animals adapt to the different seasons and cope with the short supply of food in the winter. *Adapt: become adjusted to new conditions. These animals must camouflage (disguise, hide) themselves because there are no trees. Also, some may need to burrow (dig tunnels or holes) because there is no protection. Some of these animals are also very fast.
Different Habitats Continued Deserts Arctic Tundra Polar Bear Habitat What types of animals live in the arctic? Arctic Wolf Polar Bear Bald Eagle Moose Orca Seal Reindeer Owl Habitat What types of animals live in the desert? Bat Antelope Armadillo Cobra Camel Cougar Falcon Hyena 4
Why are these animals able to live in these habitats? Read Aloud Arctic Tundra Desert These animals have thick fur to keep them warm. Also, some animals have shorter ears and bodies so there is less skin exposed. Some animals leave the desert for cooler areas. Many animals are nocturnal (sleep during the day and are awake at night). Some animals burrow to get away from heat. Some animals have long limbs to release heat. Some are also able to retain water.
Activity: Comparing and Contrasting Habitats Answers! Take a minute as a group to compare these five habitats. Wetlands Forests Rivers, near coasts/lakes, flat areas that get a lot of rain. Wet. Soil is low in oxygen. Various sizes. Trees. Need Water for trees to survive and thrive. Depends on temperature, soil, growing season, and altitude. Grasslands Arctic Tundra Grass. Flat terrain. Periods of rain, periods of drought. On all continents except Antarctica. Very cold, below freezing temperatures. Short days. Strong winds. Less than 10 inches of precipitation. Some permanently frozen ground: permafrost (can be 1000 feet thick.) Hint: Think about climate, terrain, and animals. Desert Very little rain, random. Variable temperatures. Very hot. Strong Winds. 5
