Instructions for Part One: Canada’s Mission Goals - Afghanistan For part one of this assignment use the Canadian Government Website: – Canada In Afghanistan Canada In Afghanistan Fill in the slides provided with the information requested in your own words. This is at most a partner (1 or 2 person) assignment! Each slide will also contain a picture of Canada’s war/mission in Afghanistan which you will provide a link to. – See the example on the title page of this presentation and then ask for help if you do not know how to create links. – You pictures cannot all be from the same site.

Priority One: Security How is Canada Providing Help ? – They are providing training to help strengthen and stabilize the Afghan National Army. – Trying to increase the national police to promote law and order. – Supplied over 99 million over 3 years towards training, equipment, support and initiatives. – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? – There will be an increased promotion of law and order. – Progress will be made in the training of officials and officers.

Priority Two: Basic Services How is Canada Providing Help ? – Providing education, vocational training, improving roads and job creation. – Rehabilitating their main water source. – Repairing schools in Kandahar. – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? – Kandahar’s provincial administration will be able to supply basic services. – More schools will be built or repaired to better standards, better water systems, more available jobs. nouvelles/2011/2011_03_07.aspx?lang=eng

Priority Three: Humanitarian Aid How is Canada Providing Help ? – Providing assistance to people in need. Refugees, returnees, widows and people left homeless. – Supplying food to those who cannot afford or get it. – Vaccinations to promote healthy living. – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? – Continue to aid those in need. – They hope to see progress in many aspects, including emergency assistance, health services and education. mission_to_training/

Priority Five: National Institutions How is Canada Providing Help ? – Provide financial and technical support. – Communicate with other donors to help supply each other with resources. – Train, mentor equip and support programs that will help train people. – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? – National, provincial and local institutions will increase in capacity to deliver public programs and services. – Effective budgeting will be in effect.

Priority Six: Reconciliation How is Canada Providing Help ? – Promoting peace through the government and not only through military. – Supplying money to improve communication with citizens – To encourage dialouge. – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? – Supply support to political groups. – Improve Afghan government communication with their people.

Signature Project 1 – Dahla Dam and Irrigation System Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? By repairing the irrigation system, it will again supply the majority of water to the population, help the land and provide thousands of jobs. What is Canada doing to help? Repairing the Dahla Dam, supplying tools necessary to replace and repair. Training farmers to know how to manage water and crops /story.html

Signature Project 2 – Education Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? They have an extremely low education level, so by increasing this, it will open the door for better jobs and more opportunities. Furthering education will also help to boost the economy. What is Canada doing to help? Help build and repair schools in Kandahar Delivering more education to teachers and directors, so they can be more prepared.

Signature Project 3 – Polio Eradication Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? Immunization of the people will help to increase lower the chance and spreading of Polio, and also increase health safety. With the decreased spread of Polio, there will be an older average age of the population. What is Canada doing to help? Investing millions of dollars to help supply immunizations for debilitating diseases. Providing education of diseases and health, to educate everyone on general health. Also set up multiple stations, where you can receive the vaccinatiion.
