Journey Through a Camera So you now know the basics of how a camera works, what the “shooting modes” do and how to adjust a camera’s “exposure” by using shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings. Please read the following Powerpoint and answer the handout question sheet in order to further explore some camera functions and techniques:

#1 – Choosing a Shooting Mode Overview of Typical Mode Dial Settings

#2 Press the Shutter Half Way Down 1. Meter reading of light What Meter Reading Looks Like to a Camera Demo 2. Camera decides on Exposure settings (Combination of Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO) Demo of Shutter Speed Effect on Image Demo of Shutter Speed changes Demo of Aperture Impact on Exposure Typical Aperture Options What Is ISO Sensitivity? Article 3. Camera decides on use of Flash (On, Off, Red Eye Reduction) Redeye Demo of Effect 4. Camera will use AF sensors to Focus on objects it thinks you want to focus on. Focus zones Demo Servo AF Focus Demo Practicing Using Focus Zones and Composing after Focusing

#3 Light Enters the Camera (Camera Lenses and Focal Length)

Camera Lenses and Focal Length There are 3 main focal ranges in camera lenses: 1 Wide angle 2 Standard 3 Tele-photo There are 2 main styles of camera lense: 1 Zoom – Variable Focal length 2 Prime – Fixed focal length

Optical Zoom = Zooming by moving glass lenses closer or further apart in a lens. Digital Zoom – created by expanding each pixel size in an image (same as zooming in with Photoshop magnifier tool)

The Basic Job of the Lens! Lens Speed = A fast lens is one capable of opening up to a big aperture. For example, a lens capable of f/1.2 would be considered speedy while one that couldn’t open up to anything bigger than f/8 would be considered slow.

Focal Length The distance between the Camera lens and the CCD (camera pixel sensor). We change the focal length in order To FOCUS the subject. 2 ways to change the Focal Length: 1 Change the lens (Eg. wide angle to Telephoto) 2 Use the Zoom function to extend the focal length of the lens.

The Focal Length and Depth of Field are determined by the type of lens, focal length and size of lens iris opening (aperture).

#4 Shooting in Manual Mode Adjusting the 3 Determiners of Exposure (Finding a Balance) Practice Using the 3 Determiners of Exposure!

#5 Using Exposure Compensation Instead of “M”, “AV” or “TV” Exposure Compensation allows a photographer to quickly improve a photograph’s EXPOSURE. By pressing the Exposure Compensation button you can use the Exposure Meter to brighten or dim your photo’s overall exposure. Please practice: Exposure Compensation | CameraSim
