Encouragement of Renewable Resources SB9 Jessica Ramsey, Emilie Retton, Madi Task. ISSUE TOPIC Environment & Energy

Issues No more burning! Putting harmful fumes into the air (like burning coals and fossil fuels) is not good for the environment. Who wants to breathe in that stuff??!??!?!

Issues Photochemical Smog & Acid Rain Smog is a mixture of fog and smoke produced by burning coals and fossil fuels. This is very dangerous to be walking or driving around in. Acid rain can cause extremely harmful effects on the environment, and even on you.

Issues Save the crops! Pollution from smog and acid rain by burning fossil fuels and coals will kill our country’s plants. Adding wind turbines saves these because you can still farm around them.

Solutions Wind turbines add renewable energy resources! (Energy that can be recycled and used again that never runs out.) Burning fossil fuels and coals is not only terrible for the environment, but eventually, it will run out. It’s nonrenewable. We should be getting used to renewable energy resources.

Solutions This bill will add multiple wind turbine farms to windy areas (maybe around lakes and oceans). For this bill to work, places that will be appropriate have to have wind speeds above 12-14mph.

Solutions Why wind energy? Wind is the green section of the chart. It’s the second biggest when it comes to the usage of wind energy—we could grow on it’s 14.7% Wind energy is a close second for the cheapest in renewable energy, next to geothermal.

Solutions Using wind energy as our electricity is cheaper to pay for than coal. Wind energy costs $60 MWh while coal costs $74-$88 MWh MWh = megawatts per hour Click below for the graph where we got this info…

Fiscal Impact Wind turbine cost: $10,000 (each) Installation: $15,000 (for one wind farm) Transformers: Average salary for wind technician: $60,000 (Depending on the size of the wind farm, we won't know how many jobs are supplied.) We’re planning on cutting spending on oil and coal companies (if we need more money on the environment & energy budget) since they will decrease with more wind energy being used.
