Big Idea 2.0

Density is the amount of matter or particles in a given volume Weight vs Mass Weight is a measure of the force of gravity on an object Mass is the amount of mass in an object On earth weight and mass seem to be the same The moon has 1/6 of our gravity so the mass would be the same but weight would be different

Volume How much space an object takes up Volume and mass determine density, Density can be measured by finding the mass of a substance in a given volume

Demo Have you ever used the word ‘dense’? What is the difference between 25 grams of crispy rice and 25 grams of regular rice Compare volume and mass Which is the most dense?

Water and other Fluids Predict the density of the following: Water, corn syrup, glycerin, canola oil and rubbing alcohol Activity: Liquid layers Take 20 ml of each liquid, 2 types of food colouring, 5 test tubes and a funnel

Wrap up Which fluids had the greatest density (mass to volume ratio) How would you sketch the particles of each fluid What are some practical applications for knowing that a density of a fluid is more or less than water?

Oil- Spills Small oil spills happen all the time, in Canada there are 12 spills of over 4000 L every day into our water systems !!! Oil has a lower density and floats on water This can both help and hurt the environment: Birds are greatly damaged by the oil floating Floating oil is easier to clean up than of it sinks
