Facts about the River Nile The River Nile is the LONGEST river in the world Most Egyptians lived near the Nile as it provided water, food, transportation and excellent soil for growing food It has a length of about 6,695 kilometres long Its basin is HUGE it includes parts of Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sudan but mostly Egypt and more The name Nile comes from the Greek “Neilos”, which means valley

Features of the River Nile The Nile can save peoples lives because it provides foods such as fish, bread and beer. The fertile soil near the river Nile allowed the ancient Egyptians to grow wheat. The wheat could be made into beer or bread. The Egyptians didn't drink dirty water because in some parts of the river Nile the water was very clean to drink. Not just food came from the Nile but came from the trees. The trees provided fruits such as figs and grapes. For the wealthy ancient Egyptians they had coconuts and olives. As for the poorer ancient Egyptian families it seemed they had to exist on whatever they could find.

Why did the Nile Flood? The Nile flooded because the melting snow and heavy rain in the Ethiopian Mountains sent the water causing the banks of the River Nile in Egypt to overflow on the desert land When did the Nile Flood? The River Nile flooded every year between June and September, in a season Egyptians called akhet Why the Nile does not flood now? The construction of the Aswan Dam in the 1960’s meant that from 1970 the annual flood was controlled
