DO NOW: HOW DID THE XYZ AFFAIR AND THE ALIEN AND SEDITION ACTS AFFECT THE PRESIDENCY OF JOHN ADAMS? Aim: Why was the Election of 1800 known as the Revolution of 1800?

Objectives To analyze primary source quotes. To understand why the election of 1800 can be viewed as a revolution.

The Election of 1800 John Adams v. Thomas Jefferson Each side believed that the other’s success would ruin the nation. Jefferson defeated John Adams in another very close and emotional race.

"John Adams is a blind, bald, toothless man who wants to start a war with France. While he's not busy importing mistresses from Europe he's trying to marry one of his sons to a daughter of King George. Haven't we had enough Monarchy in America?" Thomas Jefferson "If Thomas Jefferson wins, robbery, rape and incest will be openly taught and practiced. The air will be wrent with the cries of the distressed, the soil will be soaked with blood and the air black with crimes. Are you prepared to see your dwellings in flames, female chastity violated, children writhing on a pike?" John Adams Thomas Jefferson VS. John Adams Judging from the quotes above, how well did these two men get along during the Election of 1800?

Democratic-Republicans Disliked the Alien and Sedition Acts. Disliked Adams’ decision to expand navy and army. Disliked that Adams had further centralized government power.

Jefferson’s View of American Government Thomas Jefferson believed in a weak central government. He was a strict interpreter of the Constitution. America’s future would be agrarian.

Why is the Election of 1800 significant? It was the first peaceful exchange of power in U.S. History. Federalist lose power to Democratic-Republicans. No war, No bloodshed. Showed that the American system works!
