SUSTAINABLE DESIGN TASKS In this section, you are going to: design products that people want to keep and treasure. Find out the potential effects of our designs on the environment Design products which have positive effects for everyone in the world Work in design teams and communicate ideas to each other, improving communication skills Present design ideas within the group.

SUSTAINABLE/ETHICAL DESIGNING.. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

How does this image affect you?

Greener design. What do you think about these statements? Do you agree or disagree? “It’s not designers that exploit poor people, its big companies”“It’s not designers that exploit poor people, its big companies” “Its always best to use local products or materials in our products”“Its always best to use local products or materials in our products” “Products should be made to last along time”“Products should be made to last along time”

The 6 R’s what are they? Reduce -is it possible to reduce the amount of materials used? This will help to protect valuable resources. Rethink - is there a better way to solve this problem that is less damaging to the environment? Refuse - this means not accepting things that are not the best option for the environment. For example, is the packaging really needed? Recycle - could recycled materials be used, or is the product made from materials that are easy to recycle? Reuse - could the product have another use? Could its parts be used in other products? Is this information clearly communicated on the product? This will extend its life. Repair - is the product easy to repair? This will extend its life.

MAKE ME CAR FREE! Shopping bags – How do you get your shopping home? FACTS Plastic bags are made from oil which is a natural resource which is unsustainable. Plastic bags take up to 500 years to decay Paper bags could be used but easily get wet. An alternative is a organically sourced, fair traded hemp or cotton bag but if you have heavy shopping it still as to be transported by a car. IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE?

Homework Design a bag or trolley that helps a fashion conscious young person to shop without the car. THE QUESTION IS – would you use or buy the product that you design? YOU ARE DESIGNING A PRODUCT SO YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT THE STRUCTURE AND SHAPE OF THE BAG OR TROLLEY – SKETCHES NEED TO BE DRAWN IN 3D

DESIGN TASK – BRIDGE DESIGN Once you have decided on the style of bridge you are going to design you need to: Sketch quick drawings of your bridge from the FRONT/SIDE AND PLAN VIEW – demonstration needed The bridge cannot exceed –HEIGHT – 30cm’s WIDTH – 50cm’s otherwise you are disqualified YOU WILL HAVE 30 MINUTES TO COMPLETE TASK
