WAR, PEACE AND POLITICS By Juan Paolo Jabile

This is of a time of great instability where the old Monarchies of Europe have fallen after hundreds of years of rule and the people are given two choices The Socialist Communists and the Fascist. War, Peace and Politics

 The artists` works were greatly influenced by the political climate surrounding them  Some artist were political activist  Their artwork as a result reflected their political and philosophical beliefs

War, Peace and Politics  They brought about a new way of looking at the world  This new way of looking was used to counter the desensitization brought about by the invention of cameras  They did not look into their imaginations but rather took what they saw from the world and conveyed it through their perspective.

The Artist Pablo Picasso Alberto Giacometti Diego Rivera

42)Picasso. Guernica. (1937). Oil on Canvas. “What do you think an artist is?...he is a political being, constantly aware of the heart breaking, passionate, or delightful things that happen in the world, shaping himself completely in their image. Painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war.” — Pablo Picasso

42)Picasso. Guernica. (1937). Oil on Canvas.  To depict the bombing of the town of Guernica by the Rebel Franco Nationalists  This bombing was done by the German Luftwaffe and the Italian Fascist Avaizione Legionaria, at the request of Francisco Franco  The point of the attack was to scare there was no tactical gain  Shocked by the senseless killings Picasso in one month created the piece in an achromatic colour scheme ( grey, black and white)

43) Giacometti. Man Pointing. (1947) Bronze.

 The piece was created in one night- the process of destruction & recreation  Broke away from surrealism which was looking below the realist surface of life to existentialism a contemplation on the very basics of human existence and this lack of meaning.  It is one of several in a series of extremely thin humans and animals cast out of bronze. A representation of the horrors of concentration camps.  He struggled greatly with the meaning of life.
