Verb Tenses- Irregular Verbs Grammar Lesson #1

Verb Tense Past Perfect Past Present Perfect Present Future Perfect Future In the world of verbs, time is conveyed by tense. Every verb has six tenses: Action took place in the past and ended in the past (is not currently continuing) Action that will take place at some time in the future Action that’s happening NOW, at the present time

Brainpop! This time through, pay special attention to the section on irregular verbs.

A Review of Regular Verbs Present Tense: With regular verbs the rule is simple…base form of the verb. smile(s) walk(s) play(s) laugh(s) Past Tense: With regular verbs the rule is simple…add “ed.” smiled walked played laughed Future Tense: With regular verbs the rule is simple…add “will.” will smile will walk will play will laugh

Irregular Verbs Some goofy verbs just don’t want to follow the rules. Most of the time, we can identify these words because they just don’t sound right to our ears: The movie begined at 6:00. The movie _________ at 6:00. I catched a cold because I didn’t wear my coat. I _________ a cold because I didn’t wear my coat. The good news is that the present and future tense are rule followers. That pesky past tense is the one that breaks the rules.

Irregular Verbs Sometimes the verb changes completely: Present: I sing a tune to put myself in a good mood. Past: I sang Happy Birthday to my brother. Sometimes it stays the same as the present tense: Present: I show my pumpkin to the class, then set it down on my desk. Past: Last October, I came back from the farm and set the pumpkin on my desk.

Let’s practice! Fill in the sentences with the appropriate verb tense. Infinitive: to drink PAST- Jenny __________ her soda with a straw. PRESENT- Jenny __________ her soda with a straw. FUTURE- Jenny __________ her soda with a straw. Infinitive: to read PAST- The boys ___________ mostly mystery books. PRESENT- The boys ___________ mostly mystery books. FUTURE- The boys ___________ mostly mystery books.

Let’s Practice!

Game Time! Your team will have 2 minutes to come up with as many irregular verbs as you can. Example: caught Each team will read their list aloud. Repeats will be crossed off the list. The team with the most unique irregular verbs is the winner!

Usage- choose, chose choose = to select rhymes with shoes Freda suffered an anxiety attack when she had to choose between small curd and large curd cottage cheese. chose = the PAST TENSE of choose rhymes with shows After pondering the question of whether to be a bee or not to be a bee in the school play, Hamlin chose to be a bee.

Practice! In pairs, decide which word fills in the blank: choose (present tense) or chose (past tense) Did you ________ the movie for today? Who __________ the movie yesterday? Everyone needs to _________ a planet to study. Which one will you ___________? Last year I __________ Mars.

Homework Due Date- TUESDAY, MAY 1 (our next Grammar Day) Be sure to complete BOTH SIDES!
