LiDAR Compressor 1.1
Compression Lossless 25% or smaller of the original size Some datasets can be compressed to 15% or smaller of their original size Lossy Performs lossless compression first File is then decimated to meet target file size Greater compression results in fewer points in output file Point that remain are geospatially accurate 2
Overview MrSID Generation 4 (*.SID) Now there are two “flavors” of MrSID Raster (from images such as TIFF files) LiDAR (from LiDAR data such as LAS files) Will it be a 2D Image? It remains as 3D LiDAR data. The full point cloud is accessible. Will all of the point data be included in the compressed file? Yes! Uses standard LAS fields Can create custom fields. 3
Overview Can I use the compressed MrSID file in my application? Currently supported in: ESRI ArcGIS 3D Analyst Merrick MARS® 6.0 Global Mapper 11.0 LizardTech GeoViewer Expect more products in the coming months Can I create the same derivatives and use the same workflow I currently use with my data? Yes! The new compressed MrSID LiDAR files allow programs to access the full point cloud data as the original file. The only difference is that it is faster and takes up less disk space. 4
Overview Will I be able to extract the original file again? Yes! A free GUI decompression utility is available on the LizardTech website and comes installed with LiDAR Compressor. Provides functionality to go from MrSID to ASCII or LAS. Will the decompressed file be the same as the original? Yes, for lossless compression Lossy compression will have fewer points than the original file 5
