Ken Rinaldo By Emily Hogan

Biology influenced Art I choose the topic of Biology because I’ve always been interested into it, having taken 2 years of biology classes in high school. The scientific field is about the study of living organisms, it covers plant life, animal life, microbiology, anatomy, and evolution. The last is what Ken Rinaldo’s art focuses on.

Kin Rinaldo Is a multi media artist and theorist explores the line between the organic and inorganic. His art combines the organic and mechanical to create co-evolution between the living and the technological. He uses robotics, biological art, interspecies communication, and digital imaging in his art. And his art has been displayed in Museums around the world, and has won awards for his work.

Augmented Fish Reality And interactive installation that featured five Betta Fish inside of robotic fish bowl sculptures. The fish controlled moved their bowls by responding colored light sensors around it, Betta Fish have good eyes. The fish had a tendency of approaching Human viewers due to their dependency on them for food. The lily in the bowl is there to naturally remove waste out of the bowl, which is a symbolic relationship. The project was inspired by studies on fish intelligence A camera inside two of the bowls project live images of the bowl and the viewers outside their bowl, creating the effect that their inside of an reverse aquarium.

BUZZ II Buzz II is a installation that combines audio, video, glass, bacteria, and wine into interesting piece You sit in front of the screen, your ear up to the glass to hear the sound of beehives mixed with the sound of telephones and other networking sound. The glass points toward a table where wine glasses filled with various types of wine are arranged into a giant bee. The image of the bee on screen fades away into the production of yeast cells and bacteria fermentation of wine, to show the viewer how important Bee’s are to wine production, and how they are all connected in this network system. Afterwards the viewers got to taste Port Wine to experience the end result of the bee’s work.

Spider Haus Created as a trans-species communication art piece, which allows the viewer to observe a house spider on a little screen. Inside the clear top of the piece is a tiny camera mounted in the center of the fake cactus structure, allowing the viewer to track the spider along its web that’s been built in the middle. The piece was made to play off peoples fear of spiders and how spiders like the House Spider is beneficial and nothing to fear.
