Communication in virtual environment What are your personal preferences? –Make them known and be sensitive to those of others Time differences –Need to be adaptable –But set boundaries as well What is the language of work? –Use visual aids when possible to aid in common understanding –Allow others to listen, and respond – may take time over distances –Since don’t have visual clues, ask for confirmation and responses before moving on –Follow up with written summary after meetings

A few ways to maximize distance interaction Take time in communication with colleagues to socialize and get to know them – send s, pictures, IM as ice-breaker Need spontaneity, but cannot allow IM, etc, to interrupt work flow Use meetings effectively –Agree on time, agenda, etc. in advance (iterative process which may take longer due to distance and time zone differences) –Have material distributed in advance (especially when dealing with different language skills) –Use tools to best advantage –Make time here too to socialize a bit – over a virtual coffee (tea) break
