Pentecost: The Foundation of the Church

Questions to Think About…  What is the importance of the forty days during which Christ appeared to the Apostles between his Resurrection and Ascension?  What is the significance of the election of Saint Mathias?  What happened at Pentecost following Christ’s Ascension?

What is the importance of the forty days during which Christ appeared to the Apostles between his Resurrection and Ascension?  As he had spent forty days in the desert in preparation for public life, Christ gave his Apostles, a forty day period of preparation for their public ministries between his Resurrection and Ascension.  There is also a significance with the number 12 such as the twelve Apostles, and the 12 tribes of Israel.

What is the significance of the election of Saint Mathias?  As they awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit: the Apostles led by Saint Peter elected Saint Mathias to be the successor of the office or bishopric of Judas to restore the apostolic college.

What happened at Pentecost following Christ’s Ascension?  The Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles during the Jewish feast of Pentecost.  Pentecost gave birth to the Church as the Apostles became courageous and preachers.  After the Apostles received the Holy Spirit, they went out to proclaim the Word of God by speaking in the people’s other languages.

Questions to Think About…  What is the relationship of the Holy Spirit and human understanding of God?  What is the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Sacrament of Confirmation?

What is the relationship of the Holy Spirit and human understanding of God?  The Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Elizabeth, and St. Simeon are examples of how the Holy Spirit enables people to perceive God.  Blessed Virgin Mary when the Holy Spirit made Christ incarnate in her womb.  St. Elizabeth when she recognized Mary as the Mother of the Lord.  St. Simeon, since he was inspired by the Holy Spirit, where he was led to the Temple, and recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah.

What is the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Sacrament of Confirmation?  The Holy Spirit is received especially during Confirmation.  Confirmation is the bestowing of the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands, It is the completion of the Sacrament of Initiation.  Video: Why is Confirmation ImportantWhy is Confirmation Important

The Life of the Church and the Scriptures

Questions to Think About…  What is the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the life of the Church?  What is the role of the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures?

What is the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the life of the Church?  The Holy Spirit gave life to the Church.  The ultimate witness was each Apostle enabled by the Holy Spirit to bear witness to Christ by submitting to martyrdom. If a person is called to give witness to the faith, even to the point of losing their life, the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you should say. (Lk 12:12)

What is the role of the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures?  The Holy Spirit both inspired the authors of Sacred Scripture and reveal Christ in these writings.

Questions to Think About…  What is the nature of the Holy Spirit?  What are the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives Christians? What do they mean?

What is the nature of the Holy Spirit?  The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son with whom he is consubstantial.  He spoke through the prophets in the Old Testament, is revealed in the New Testament, and is manifested in the life of the Church.

What gifts does the Holy Spirit gives Christians?  The Holy Spirit gives the faithful the theological virtue of faith, hope, and charity.  The Holy Spirit gives the gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord.  The Holy Spirit also gives us fruits (We will discuss later in the powerpoint)

What are the gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, and fortitude?  Wisdom-enables a person to enjoy the presence of God.  Understanding-helps us to discern divine truths.  Counsel-makes wise decisions easier.  Fortitude-gives strength of character.

What are the gifts of knowledge, piety, and the Fear of the Lord?  Knowledge-permits a person to use created things wisely.  Piety-makes a person know God as Abba or Father.  Fear of the Lord-ensures a person will serve God faithfully.  Video: The Gifts of the Holy SpiritThe Gifts of the Holy Spirit
