1 Peter 1:1-2 Chosen Saints in the Midst of Persecution

1 Peter 1: 1-2 NASB 1Peter 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 1Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. 1

Peter, an Apostle of Jesus Christ Jesus rebuked Peter more than any other disciple. Matt. 16:23 Peter was the only disciple who dared to rebuke Jesus. John 13:8-9 Peter confessed Jesus more boldly and accurately than any other disciple. John 21:15-17 He was the one who received a personal visit from the resurrected Jesus on the day of the resurrection. Luke 24:34 Peter denied Jesus more forcefully and publicly than any other disciple. Mark 14:

Peter Denies Christ Luke 5:11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him. Matt. 26:74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. Could Peter lose his Discipleship? Mark 16:7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’” 3

Peter Reinstated Salvation is free. There is nothing we can do to earn it. Discipleship: Count the cost! John 21:17 He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus *said to him, “Tend My sheep. 4

Peter, an Apostle of Jesus Christ He has received his apostleship as a lifetime office. He has received Christ’s commission to make disciples of all nations by baptizing them and by teaching them the gospel. (Matt. 28:19-20) Peter writes with the divine authority Jesus Christ has given him. 5

Peter, an Apostle of Jesus Christ This bold statement of apostolic authority is supported both by internal evidence in the text and by its early and universal acceptance as a part of the canon of Scripture. The double name Jesus Christ points first to Jesus' earthly ministry and second to Christ's divine calling, task, and position. 6

Who Is Qualified to Be an Apostle? The Greek noun apostolos—from which we get the word apostle—is derived from the verb apostellō, which means “to send off on a commission to do something as one’s personal representative, with credentials furnished.” 7

Criteria for Being an Apostle 1. Called: Not all who were with Christ from the beginning of His earthly ministry were “called” –Romans 1:1 Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God… –Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus… Paul described his own work as “the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus”. (Acts 20:24) 8

Criteria for Being an Apostle 2. Eyewitness to the resurrection of Christ Paul also saw the resurrected Christ –“Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?” (1Cor. 9:1) –…and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. (1 Cor. 15:8) 9

Criteria for Being an Apostle 2. Eyewitness to the resurrection of Christ (Acts 10:40-41) –“God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible, not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. 10

Criteria for Being an Apostle 3. Personally instructed by Christ –In the search for a new Apostle after Judas’ death they concluded –(Acts 1:21-22) “Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us—beginning with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.” 11

Criteria for Being an Apostle Paul was also personally instructed by Christ for 3 years like the original 12 according to Gal. 1:12, 18. –For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. (Gal.1:12) –Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days. (Gal. 1:18) 12

Criteria for Being an Apostle 4. Miraculous deeds –Exodus 4:1-5 …vs. 5 “that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.” –The primary purpose of miracles has always been to confirm the credentials of a divinely appointed messenger to establish the credibility of one who speaks for God 13

Criteria for Being an Apostle 4. Miraculous deeds (Acts 5:12,15; Heb. 2:3-4) –Acts 5: 12 At the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; –Heb. 2:3-4 …After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, –God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will. 14

Criteria for Being an Apostle 1. Called 2. Eyewitness to the resurrection of Christ 3. Personally instructed by Christ 4. Accomplish miraculous deeds If these four criteria were not met, a person could not be an apostle. These criteria eliminate the possibility for there being any modern day apostles. (Eph.2:20) 15

Criteria for Being an Apostle John 5:36 Jesus speaks about John “But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John for the works which the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I do testify about me that the Father has sent me.” 16

Strangers …to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 17

1Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, Eph. 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. Acts 13:48 …and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. 2Thess. 2:13 … God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation. John 15:16 “You did not choose Me but I chose you, … 18

1Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, Foreknowledge (prognōsis) God's foreknowledge is based upon His plan or eternal purpose, which embraces everything that comes to pass. 1 Peter 1:20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 19

… through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: The sanctifying work of the Spirit has set these chosen ones apart for service, putting God’s choice and purpose into effect. The result of the Spirit’s work is obedience. Rom. 8:13 (NASB) for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 20

Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. The blessings desired for them are grace and peace. 1. Grace 2. Peace 3. Prayer request to multiply Blessings 21
