 Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a problem of not being able to focus, being overactive, not being able control behavior, or a combination of these.  Must be out of the normal range for a person's age and development to be diagnosed as ADHD

 No distinct known cause  Thought to be stemmed gene interactions  Non-genetic factors that may contribute to ADHD: ◦ Smoking/drinking during pregnancy ◦ Exposure to lead or other toxic substances ◦ Extreme neglect, abuse, or social depravtion

 Predominantly Hyperactive: Mainly hyperactive or impulsive symptoms, few or no inattentive symptoms.  Predominantly Inattentive: Mainly inattentive symptoms, few or no hyperactive symptoms (ADD).  Combined: Both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms.

 Hyperactive subtype: - Fidgeting or squirming - Getting up frequently to walk around - Difficultly playing quietly - Running or climbing at inappropriate times - Excessive talking

 Inattentive Subtype: - Inability to sustain attention on tasks - Making careless mistakes - Frequent shifts from one uncompleted activity to another -Procrastination -Disorganized work habits -Forgetfulness in daily activities

 Becomes difficult to learn new things  Disorganization causes misplacement of valued objects  Difficulty making new friends  A feeling of isolation

 60% of children who have ADHD will have the illness into adulthood  4-5% of all adults have ADHD  ADHD may causes adults to lose jobs  ADHD makes it very difficult to support a family

 Medications: ◦ Stimulants – The best known and most widely used treatment. ◦ Nonstimulants – Approved for treating ADHD in Fewer side effects than stimulants and can last up to 24 hours.

 Behavioral Therapy ◦ Helps child change behavior ◦ Teaches child monitor behavior ◦ Teaches child to praise himself/herself after acting a desired way ◦ Best if therapy aided by parent or teacher
