Seven Trumpet Bowls of God’s Wrath- Eschatology Series: Critical Doctrine Text: Revelation 10:11 PRAY

The Book of Revelation Revelation is the act of revealing or disclosing something, especially a dramatic disclosure of something not previously known or realized. In Theology it means a manifestation of divine will or truth. God's disclosure of his own nature and his purpose for mankind, esp through the words of human intermediaries. The Book of revelation is not meant to be difficult and mysterious for it is revealed truth from God, but some things revealed are not meant to be fully realised until the time of the end.

Eschatology Eschatology is the study of end times, it is the study of prophecy related to end times. 1. The branch of theology that is concerned with the end of the world or of humankind.2. A belief or a doctrine concerning the ultimate or final things, such as death, the destiny of humanity, the Second Coming and the Last Judgment.

The Book of Revelation Chapters 4-18 The Apocalypse Chapter 1-3: The Revelation of Jesus Christ the Letter to the Churches Chapters 4-18 The Apocalypse Chapter 19-22 The Second Coming The Judgment The Millennium Eternity

Prophecy Again We will be looking at the Apocalypse today and try to understand how it was intended to be understood. The key to this sermon and I believe understanding the Apocalyptic part of Revelation is our text: Revelation 10:11 “And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.” The Amplified says, Revelation 10:11 ”Then they said to me, You are to make a fresh prophecy concerning many peoples and races and nations and languages and kings.”

Prophecy Again Over the years I have always been drawn to this verse where John is told he must prophesy again, and as I took this statement literally I found that Revelation 4 to 18 can be seen as two prophesies of the same event. The first part is from Rev 4-11 The second part is from Rev 12-18 Today we will look at the seven trumpets (Rev 8-11) and the seven bowls of God’s wrath (Rev 16) and how they speak of the same series of judgments being poured out on the earth.

Mystery of God Accomplished Many commentators today will try to tell you that the last trumpet spoken of by Paul in 1Corinthians 15:51-52 is not the same as the seventh trumpet blown in Revelation 11. They teach this doctrine without Scriptural backing so as to support a Pre-Tribulational Rapture position, which does not appear in Scripture. However:

Mystery of God Accomplished 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 (AMP) Take notice! I tell you a mystery (a secret truth, an event decreed by the hidden purpose or counsel of God). We shall not all fall asleep [in death], but we shall all be changed (transformed) In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the [sound of the] last trumpet call. For a trumpet will sound, and the dead [in Christ] will be raised imperishable (free and immune from decay), and we shall be changed (transformed). Revelation 10:7 (AMP) “But that when the days come when the trumpet call of the seventh angel is about to be sounded, then God’s mystery (His secret design, His hidden purpose), as He had announced the glad tidings to His servants the prophets, should be fulfilled (accomplished, completed).”

Mystery of God Accomplished The Last trumpet of 1 Corinthians 15-51-52 is the same as the Seventh Trumpet which is about to be sounded in Revelation 11. If that is the case then we should hear announcements in Revelation 11 which declare that it is finished and that the time has come for judgment.

Mystery of God Accomplished KJV: Revelation 11:15-19 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail. The wrath spoken of here is orgē which is the wrath of eternal damnation, unlike the seven bowls of God’s wrath which are poured out which is thymou wrath, which is a wrath that has an end. The orgē wrath is used in conjunction with the judgments which are about to proceed from the Lord.

Mystery of God Accomplished While we are looking at that, let us look also at the announcements made after the Seventh Bowl of God’s Wrath is poured out. KJV: Revelation 16:17-21 “And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.” The wrath here is thymou which relates to the wrath which God had just completed.

Trumpets/Bowls of God’s Wrath After realising that both the seventh trumpet of Rev 11 and the seventh bowl of God’s wrath Rev 16 has the same outcome, that of accomplishing and completing the thymou wrath of God, then the obvious study would be to compare all seven trumpets with the seven bowls of God’s wrath. If the seventh trumpet and seventh bowl speak of the same event then the rest of the trumpets and bowls should also align. What I have concluded is that the trumpet sounds in heaven and the bowl or vial of God’s thymou wrath is poured out on the earth.

Mystery of God Accomplished 1st Trumpet The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. Rev 8:7 KJV 1st Bowl And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image. Rev 16 KJV At first glance this seems not to relate, however as we will see as we study the rest of the judgments, these two verses simply explain more of what happens to the earth and those living on it when the first judgment is executed. Noisome is having an offensive smell.

Mystery of God Accomplished 2nd Trumpet And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. Rev 8:8-9 KJV 2nd Bowl And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. Rev 16:3 KJV

Mystery of God Accomplished It is clear to see the similarities, that this judgment was poured on the sea. However, people will say, “One says a third of the creatures in the sea died, and the other says all the living creatures died.” To understand this text and its comparison we need to look at the literal translation of the Bible which reveals that a key word is left out of Rev 8:8-9

Mystery of God Accomplished 2nd Trumpet And the second angel sounded and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea and the third part of the sea became blood. And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea and had souls died and the third part of the ships were destroyed Rev 8:8-9 Literal 2nd Bowl And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea and it became as the blood of a dead man and every living soul died in the sea. Rev 16:3 Literal

Mystery of God Accomplished The word for soul in both verses is the Greek word psychē which is the the vital breath, breath of life. I believe they are talking of whales, dolphins, seals etc. those who breathe air and do not have gills yet live in and around the sea. Both of these Scriptures speak of creatures in the sea with souls being wiped out completely. Rev 8:9 says ... And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea and had souls died. So a third of the sea creatures consists of creatures with souls and they all die. Rev 16:3 tells us that ...every living soul died in the sea. Which is saying the same thing.

Mystery of God Accomplished 3rd Trumpet And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. Rev 8:10-11 KJV 3rd Bowl And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments. Rev 16:16:4-7 KJV

Mystery of God Accomplished 4th Trumpet And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. Rev 8:12 KJV 4th Bowl And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. Rev 16:8-9 KJV

Mystery of God Accomplished 5th Trumpet And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. [Read in Bible] Rev 9:1-12 KJV 5th Bowl And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. Rev 16:10-11 KJV Point here is Rev 9:5And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 6And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. Rev 16:10-11 Men gnawed their tongues in agony and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores,

Mystery of God Accomplished 6th Trumpet And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. [Read in Bible] Rev 9:13-21 KJV 6th Bowl And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. [Read in Bible] Rev 16:12-16 KJV

Immanency It is interesting to note that Jesus said just before the seventh bowl of God’s wrath is poured out on the earth, “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.” Revelation 16:15 KJV If Jesus is mentioning His immanent return this far into the tribulation, then I believe that the doctrine of immanency needs an overhaul. Let’s Pray
