Campus School Motto Be Responsible (Fuze) Be Respectful (Zun zhong) Be Ready (Zhun bei hao)

Campus School University of Memphis Why should students learn a foreign language? How long should they pursue language studies? One language versus multiple languages? When should foreign language learning begin?

Who We Are The Confucius Institute is a non-profit, public institute with the goal of promoting Chinese language and culture and supporting local Chinese teaching internationally through affiliated Confucius Institutes around the globe. Confucius Institutes were established by the Office of Chinese Language Council International headquartered in Beijing. The University of Memphis is home to the only Confucius Institute in the state of Tennessee and the first in the Mid-South. In conjunction with its partner institution, Hubei University in China, the Confucius Institute at the University of Memphis promotes understanding of the Chinese language and culture among the people of the United States, develops friendly relations between the U.S. and China, accelerates the expansion of multiculturalism, and provides opportunities for students studying the Chinese language.

What We Do Offer Chinese language and culture classes Offer Chinese cultural lecture series Offer Chinese proficiency assessment tests Provide teacher training Provide a wealth of research and resources Provide opportunities for scholar and student exchange programs Encourage Sino-American comparative research Provide services and consultation to communities and the state Provide sister school programs with schools in China Provide distance learning opportunities with teachers in China Provide on campus Chinese courses and cultural programs for academic and non-academic credit

Our Mission The mission of the Confucius Institute at the University of Memphis (CIUM) is to promote the Chinese language and culture, promote friendly relationships between China and the world, and to enhance the development of multiculturalism in order to contribute to the building of a harmonious world.

Our Vision for Campus School To provide a world-class language program that will offer Mandarin Chinese as a second language to all Campus School students. To incorporate interdisciplinary programs utilizing the Chinese language and culture such as mathematics, social studies, the visual arts, the performing arts, and history. To include learning opportunities for parents and staff as well as students. To assist students in becoming fluent in Mandarin Chinese through the continuity of study over multiple years.

Why Study Chinese? Mandarin Chinese is spoken by more people than any other language in the world. Chinese is the third most spoken language in the United States, following only English and Spanish. China has the largest population in the world with over 1.3 billion people. China has the second largest economy in the world and is one of America's largest trading partners. Studying Chinese gives students a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture and history.
