Target Group & Approach Target Group Priority target group is the SPC- Community Education Training Centre (CETC) Trainers for community developments in formal and informal training Approach Training of Trainers

Main Resources SPC/GIZ/AusAid Key Messages and Learning Outcomes on CC & DRM (First draft 2012) SPC SOPAC Hazard in the Pacific Factsheets USP PACE-SD Factsheets on CC Country Profiles (PCCSP Climate Change Projections) IPCC Report

Resources Draft Key messages and Learning Outcomes for Education on CC and DRM in the Pacific Region. (9 key elements of CC &DRM) (Guidance for Educators in Formal and In-formal Education – first draft SPC,GIZ & AUSAID; second draft will include USP, SPREP and UNESCO Science of Climate Change & Earth Systems Climatic Changes Hazard and Disasters/ Extremes Vulnerability, Risks Biophysical and Socioeconomic/Cultural Impacts Policy Responses Mitigate (reduce) emissions (responses) Adapt to Changes (responses) Reduce Disaster Risks (responses)

Content There are 4 Sessions Each session Reading materials basic concepts of CC and DRM local examples and illustrations Exercises Review Questions Group Work Task Resources Flexible depending on the availability of resources Hard copies of resources to be provided weblinks (if internet available)

Sessions Session 1: Natural Hazard and Disasters in the Pacific Identify and learn the most common hazards and understand why a hazard can become a disaster. Session 2: Causes and Effects of Climate Change Demonstrate understanding of the causes and the effects of climate change.

Session 3: Vulnerabilities and Impacts Demonstrate the skill to identify vulnerabilities to hazards and climate changes and variability and its impacts on communities and their livelihood. Session 4: Identification of Option for Adaptation, Emission Mitigation and Disaster Risk Reduction Identifying different ways of adapting to changes and reducing disaster risks through sustainable community development.

Session 1: Natural Hazard and Disasters in the Pacific a. Definitions of hazard and disaster simplified from the Pacific Disaster Net/ some UNISDR b. Difference between hazard and disaster c. The different types of hazards Hydro-meteorological hazard Geological Hazard Biological Hazard Other Hazards

Session 2: Causes and Effects of Climate Change Definition of weather, climate and variability Difference between weather, climate and variability Global Warming & Causes of Change Greenhouse Gas Effect Sources of GHG Observed & Expected changes in the Pacific

Session 3: Vulnerabilities and Impacts What is vulnerability? Why are we so vulnerable? How can we assess vulnerability to disaster risks and climate change? Impact of CC and Hazards/Disasters on various sectors in the Pacific. Human development Biodiversity (Marine/Land) Agriculture/Forestry Water Coastal Fisheries Tourism Physical Infrastructures Health Positive & Negative Impacts

Session 4: Identification of Option for Adaptation, Emission Mitigation and Disaster Risk Reduction What is mitigation? (reducing emission and reducing risk to hazards) How can communities adapt to changes? How can communities reduce disaster risks? For each examples and approaches provided
