Spring Flowers that Grow from Bulbs Chapter 1
These are hyacinths. They grow from bulbs. Hyacinths have a very sweet fragrance. Hyacinths can be white, blue, and shades of pink.
These are what hyacinth bulbs look like. These bulbs are being “forced” to bloom. The roots grow in the water.
These are tulips. Tulips grow from bulbs. They have many different shapes and colors.
These are tulip bulbs. Tulip bulbs are planted in the fall to bloom in the spring.
This flower is called a grape hyacinth. The colors range from white to shades of blue. The bulbs will multiply rapidly to produce more flowers year after year.
These are grape hyacinth bulbs. They are very small bulbs. If you look closely at the bulb on the right, you will see bulblets forming on the main bulb. This is how the bulbs multiply.
Daffodil is the name of these bright, early spring flowers. The colors range from white to many shades of yellow and orange. The blooms can be quite small or very large.

These are bearded iris. They come in many different color combinations. Iris grow from rhizomes.
Iris rhizomes look like this. The rhizome should not be planted in the soil too deeply. Most varieties of iris will multiply quickly.
Spring Flowers That Grow from Seed Chapter 2
These pretty flowers are called pansies. Some people call them monkey faces! Pansies like the cool weather. It is best to plant them in the fall to have masses of blooms the following spring.
After the pansy blooms, a seed pod forms. Once the seed pod is ripe, it will open like this and the seed will fall out to produce more pansies.
These colorful flowers are called primrose. The flowers are usually two-toned, having a different colored “eye” in the center.

This is a forsythia shrub. One of the very first blooms of the year, the forsythia marks the beginning of spring. The smaller picture shows a close-up of the individual flowers.
Rhododendrons are a favorite shrub. They come in many different colors from white, to shades of pink, purple, and red. The glossy leaves of the rhododendron stay green all year.

These are dogwood trees. The blooms can be pink or white. Many areas of the country have festivals when the dogwoods bloom in the spring.
This is a favorite species for many. The Bradford pear tree blooms very early in the spring, and loses its leaves very late in the fall. Many people like to line their driveways with these pretty trees.
